Despite a short trial period, this effective application saves you some hard drive space by tracking down duplicate files. Duplicate File Detective's interface is busy but well organized, with a step-by-step wizard that walks you through the process of locating files with identical names, sizes, and content values.

It's simple to browse and select locations to scan, and you can create and save projects for future use. File masks and filters are provided to search for certain file types, such as image files and MP3s. Likewise, Duplicate File Detective includes a built-in hash calculator for computing checksum values. In our tests, redundant files were uncovered fairly quickly and placed alongside the original files. The program includes several options to manage files, including opening, renaming, moving, or deleting them.

Summary reports are available in CSV, HTML, and XML formats. Our only complaint is its 15-day trial period, but aside from the demo restriction, this application brings an impressive array of options to keep your hard drive's duplicate-free.
