"Still useful & great"

April 17, 2008  |  By macmedix

 |  Version: Comictastic 2.3.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Comictastic is still my favorite comic scraping software. I use it every morning to read the funnies on my Mac, as I have for several years. Sometimes it is a little tricky to configure it to get the comic I want, but (except for flash) is always does it. I love being able to see my 42 favorite comics without having to wait for & deal with al the blinking spinning ads on the websites. Yes, the developer said he has moved on. But the software still works.

If you don't buy a license, it displays one of several nag comics to ask you to pay. Simply click to the next or any other comic to clear that for awhile.

So everyday, all I have to do is launch Comictastic (automated via Cronnix) and press the down arrow to see each new comic. Those are all cached on my HD, with option of how long to keep, so performance is great, even on a slow internet connection. I haven't found anything that works as well as Comictastic for what it does.

"Apparently abandoned"

June 29, 2006  |  By Peregrin Took

 |  Version: Comictastic 2.3.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
While good in it's day (albeit with some stability bugs), Comictastic isn't keeping up. Some comic sites, for instance, are now displaying as Flash documents which CS can't handle.

It's clear that the developer has walked away from all of his applications. CS hasn't had an update in almost a year and the developer's site forums are clogged with spam, some dating back many months, so it's clear he hasn't done any further work on his applications nor his site. While that's the developer's perogative, it's disingenouous at best and borderline fraudlent at worst not to make it clear on the web site that development and support have ceased, or just take the site down altogether.

Don't pay for this app. It's clearly a dead product.

"Excellent alpha update(s)"

 |  Version: Comictastic 2.3a10

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used Comictastic for several years and am glad to see new alpha versions of 2.3 being produced after a year of no changes. But hey - until 10.4.x there was nothing to complain about in the 2.3a8 version. Anyway - excellent application and well worth the price.

"Beware! Updated comments..."

April 14, 2004  |  By cgtyoder

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
A follow-up... the author got back to me quickly and informed me that these and a few other comics' authors did not want their comics included in Comictastic, so they were removed from the defaults. You could move them our of the defaults before upgrading to 2.2, or contact the author to get a subscription list to get them back in.

"Beware! v 2.2 deletes subscriptions"

April 14, 2004  |  By cgtyoder

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I just installed v. 2.2 (upgraded from 2.2 beta 2), and found that several of my subscriptions have been deleted. The comics are still there in the cache, but they are no longer accessible from the left comic list. Some of the comic were Achewood, Boy on a Stick and Slither, Cat and Girl, Derf City. I am sure it will be fixed soon, but beware of installing this now.

"Really great piece of software"

 |  Version: Comictastic 2.1.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Comictastic is really an awesome work. It's the little things that make it special - the dock badging, the date offset, the hilarious register messages, the silly comic that shows up every once in a while, and the many features that allow you to truly customize the app. I am not sure I agree with the people who say that we are stealing from the authors of the comics, in my case I own merchandise from 2 of the 4 comics that I get, and have gotten my friends really into some of the comics that I read, when otherwise they would never have noticed them before. I think that this works as good promotional device for the authors of the comics. There is also the fact that the New York Times doesn't include comics. Now, while I prefer the New York Times to the local, and state papers, I really want comics. I can't get them without spending an extra 300-600 dollars a year. This is a lot for comics, when I truly do buy the merchandise for the comics that I read. I would reccomend this to anyone who loves the funnies.

"Works great"

July 23, 2003  |  By Brad Oliver

 |  Version: Comictastic 2.1b3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
2.1b3 has addressed most of the problems I encountered with the prior beta. As a whole, this is an excellent app with a nice interface. Considering that most of the comic URLs it's working with are moving targets, it handles them very well. It's enough to make me want to cancel my newspaper subscription. :)
