I decided to create a version of Funny Pages for the Mac desktop. It includes all 220 comics and the ability to travel back in time to view comics from the past. In demo mode Funny Pages for Mac will pick 10 random comics on launch and present them in the source list. The comics will change on every launch. Purchasing Funny Pages for Mac will unlock all 220 comics unhindered. Simply click on the comic you wish to view and it will load for that day. Click on a date in the calendar and the program will load the comic for that particular day. Simple and easy. Once the iPhone version is approved Funny Pages for Mac will sync favorites with the iPhone for a full integrated experience.
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />On 2010/8/17 I compared Funny Pages 1.0.2 and Comictastic - the application I have used for 7 years or more. CT is no longer supported so I've been hoping FP would become a replacement.
So now both an update and a review with scores. My scoring will be based on what FP offers, not based on my linking CT much better - it is what it is.
Support - I had problems getting my license key and had to contact the developer 2 different ways and wait about 6 days before getting the code. I will say they responded with the code quickly once they read my message(s).
However they have never commented on my list of possible enhancements (see 2010/8/17). Even saying they have read them and discarded most of them would show a better customer care attitude.
Problems I have with 1.0.4
Very slow to download a comic. If no other changes it needs to be pre-loading and cache them. When you go back to a previously read comic it has to download it again so there is the same 1-2 second delay all over again.
The up / down arrow keys move the highlight up and down through the column of Funnies - but it does not load the highlighted funny. I have to CLICK on one funny after the next to display them. If the arrow key moves the highlight then it should change which funny is downloaded and displayed.
If I resize the overall FP window, quit and relaunch then it loses both the size and the position of the window. It should remember my user preference of window size and location.
THe user can download funnies from a previous date. HOWEVER - you have to click the date on the calendar and even though your funny is still highlighted, you have to click the funny AGAIN. If the funny is already highlighted it needs to download the selected date when I click the calendar.
Okay - so those are what I consider interface bugs. Fix these and FP will be delivering what the description shows. But enhance it further to make it a useable program that could replace CT for me...
