Editors' review

If you're buried in jewel cases, this basic application may at least get you started on making some sense of your CD or DVD collection. CD/DVD Inventory Tool reads each disc and uploads pertinent information into a database. It then assigns a label to each CD or DVD to make searching easier once you've cataloged your collection. The interface is uninspiring but works effectively. Aside from reading information from a disc, the program has no ability to pull additional information (for movies, for example) from the Internet--if you need a detailed database, other applications on the market can do this more effectively. However, if you're looking for a bare-bones cataloging application, this might do the trick.

    "Huh?"

    August 07, 2006   |   By sbca1995

    Version: CD/DVD Inventory Tool 1.3

    Pros

None. I can't think of anyone who could find use out of this.

    Cons

Where do I begin? Let's start with interface. If you're used to Windows 3.x standards of quality, you will be right at home here. It has no power and limited functionality. I can't even figure out what it's supposed to do other than keeping a grocery list of your DVDs for you, as though you couldn't do the same thing in Excel. The one benefit is that it's just an exe, so I didn't have to do the Add/Remove Programs shuffle; just DELETE. To get movies into your list, you have to put a single DVD into your DVD-ROM drive and the program adds your movie to your library based on what it reads in the volume label. I have a DVD where the label is incorrect (it says Highway Man instead of Wicked West); can I go in and change it? Nope. And how am I supposed to get the 300+ movies I own into this database. You can't import a list of movies that are in .xls or .csv spreadsheet files; you can only import other proprietary databases for this software (gee thanks). How can they charge money for this? You're better off entering your movies into Excel and waiting for the right program to import them all into. This is not that program. Are we clear? Move along to the next junior programmer's semester project. This one expired in 1996.

    "great cd cataloguing software"

    January 27, 2005   |   By thydzik

    Version: CD/DVD Inventory Tool 1.3

    Summary

I've tried numerous different cataloguing software, but none are as good as this. Some of the good points are single database file instead of one for each CD, and auto eject and scan feature making the initial job of cataloguing all your CDs faster.
Extemely fast browsing if friends want to view your divx collection, and of course quick search function. Only bad points is cometics could be improveded, but it makes up in functionality.

    Well worth the money.

"Does what it says in description"

    September 11, 2004

    Version: CD/DVD Inventory Tool 1.3

    Summary

Nice little tool for creating inventory for your hard drive or CD (any volume you designate). Speed is OK, functionality is nothing fancy but effective - catalogue everything and allow you to search and identify what you need is on which disk. A couple improvements could be to automatically attach wildcard for search keyword and allow searching any folder. Maybe one more thing is to improve UI and help.
