Editors' review

BatchRename Pro provides a no-nonsense method for renaming files. With its well-planned setup and customizable flexibility, this should meet the needs of any user.

The program's interface is intuitive, thanks to its single-screen navigation. Commands are easily labeled and even the area where users must input all the data for customization feels like second nature. A Help file is available, but we doubt most people will need it. Users begin the program by selecting a file or folder to convert. The program lists all material for planned conversion, which allows for reorganization. From there, users click the file to convert and then either choose from the list of sample renames (ranging from numeric prefixes to date and time to suffixes and dozens of other combinations) or create their own rule. Users select options from a series of pull-down menus. From there, users simply click the conversion button and files are changed in a matter of seconds. We loved the program's simplicity, as well as its capability to get as complex as the user wants. The Preview button, easily the program's strongest feature, allows users to see what the new naming system will look like before actually applying it. This is certain to save some headaches.

The program does install desktop icons without asking, but it uninstalls cleanly. With flexibility and impressive results, the only drawback to this phenomenal converter is its short, 15-day trial period. However, that's long enough for users to learn what a great program this is.

"Own 4 licenses and want to like it :("

    September 10, 2012   |   By Tired_of_BS

    Version: BatchRename Pro 3.76

    Pros

It is the easiest method I've found for renaming files to their SHA1 hashes

    Cons

Their damn activation system. *Anything* triggers it. If I would have known then what I know now.....

It's also slower than most software I've purchased. This company appears to code only in high level languages - so it bogs down even on reasonably powerful machines.

Now they *do* respond to these problems and try to help, but it's clear they don't really understand the problems. Really don't know if it's "global product knowledge" issue or just language.

In the end, the product is what it is....

    Summary

Recommendation? Avoid. Just isn't worth the hassle. That activation "system" is reason enough to stay far away.

    "Not intuitive"

    February 04, 2010   |   By danrx1

    Version: BatchRename Pro 3.51

    Pros

    Works well

    Cons

    Too complicated.

    Summary

I had a hard time using the software, figuring out how to rename items as I wanted them renamed. I presently use a program called Name It Your Way that is much easier to use and for a small donation is available.

    Version: BatchRename Pro 3.44

    Pros

Support almost all methods that can be used for file renaming.

    Cons

Could feel a bit complex at first look, but it's really powerful and flexible.

    Summary

It's really easy to use the included favorite renaming rules. Plus I like the undo and preview renaming features, it helps.

    Version: BatchRename Pro 3.41

    Pros

    The idea of it.

    Cons

One look told me that it was more complex and sophisticated a product than I needed. I didn't want to take the time to figure it out.

"Very effective, but takes a bit of trial and error"

    March 17, 2006   |   By Skag

    Version: BatchRename 2 2.75

    Pros

This program renames files using a number of different criteria and can replace character strings in repetitive file names. Works fast and is effective.

    Cons

It's not super intutive. It took me several tries to learn how to get the files renamed the way I want them.
