  Summary

  Great program for encrypting sensitive files. I'm not sure if it works from a USB drive, but that would be great if it did. I haven't checked to see how good the security is with this program (i.e., back doors and vulnerabilities), but I think it uses AES-128 bit encryption.

  Pros

  The AxCrypt works seamlessly with the OS and all folder to allow quick encryption, decryption and file shredding. An extremely valuable tool that occupies a very small footprint and does not consume system resources.

  Cons

  Too good to complain about.

  Summary

  Free, effective, small program size, perfect tool.

• This did NOT work on my athlon 64 bit Windows 7 system

  Pros

  Easy to install, clean download, no spyware or anything. The file shredder works. Uninstalls cleanly too.

  Cons

  All it did was change the icon and the file extension. The supposedly encrypted file still opens on double click without the passphrase. Only the encrypt to exe command asked for the passphrase, and then I couldn't use it anymore after closing it.

  Summary

  I tried the encrypt, encrypt a copy, encrypt to exe command and it seemed to work. But only the encrypt to exe asked me for a pass phrase on double click. The other files still opened in its proper software (word, foxit, image browser, etc.) on double click. Yes I tried all combinations of checking and unchecking the 'remember this passphrase' box for the encrypt, encrypt a copy, and encrypt to exe commands. When I closed the file and I tried to finally decrypt and return it to it's usual unencrypted (.doc, .pdf, .jpg), it can't anymore. I get an error message saying the file is already open and being used by another program, would i like to open it as a read only file? I'm so glad I didn't test the encrypt command on important files because it shreds the original. I had to open the task manager and end the process so i could decrypt some of the other files. The rest I just trashed.

  Absolutely none that I had found.

  Summary

  Since going to Windows 7 x64, I was searching all over the place for an encryption program that was easy to use and integrated into the context menu. This was the only one I found at the time that did all that, and have been using it for close to 6 months now without any issues. A must IMO if you have a 64-bit system!

  Pros

  All it takes is on click to Encrypt, and is a lot easier to do for less tech savvy users than other encryption software.

  Cons

  It is great for keeping out your average Joe, but a determined hacker can likely get past it. Axcprypt doesn't stop your file from being deleted, and Axcrypt can be uninstalled allowing access to your previously locked file.

  Summary

  I tried Truecrypt and several others, but they didn't do what I wanted them to. This is perfect for locking a document or folder to keep family or friends out without requiring you to read through a manual.
