CNET Editors' review
Ashampoo Snap lets users take screenshots of Web pages, specific selections, or even entire desktops using its simple capture bar. Once captures are created, you can make changes such as adding elements, resizing, or rotating through an image editor. Snap 6 also allows for video and audio recording (via microphone), making production of video screencasts a cinch. Time-lapse video and interval snapshot features are other useful tools in creating video tutorials.
The latest edition of Ashampoo Snap, version 6, has added a multitude of features that have flesh out the screenshot program, but there are still some unaddressed issues from the last version--the overabundant pop-ups are still too much. Meant to "guide" new users, they end up feeling like a forced tutorial, especially if you already know what you are doing. For first-time users, the huge sets of instruction will no doubt be overwhelming.
There are also several positive changes: the capture bar can now be placed at a less obtrusive Top-Right position of the screen to prevent accidental captures; the new Color Picker feature is a welcome addition for image editors--you can now select color on your screenshot or anywhere on you desktop for editing or export to use on other editors like Adobe Photoshop; and MultiShot lets you take multiple screen caps in a row before editing--a great feature if you need to take shots of different windows.
The addition of instant uploading onto YouTube/Facebook and email is a boon to users working heavily with social media. Screenshots and videos can be directly uploaded to said sharing sites with a button click. However, be warned that there is no confirmation after the Share button is clicked, and the Save-to-File icon is right next to the Facebook/Youtube icon. One click that misses by a few inches could result in possibly embarrassing oversharing.
Ashampoo Snap 6 is available as 10-day trial and can be bumped to 40 days if you request a promotional code. The full version sells for $19.99. We recommend it to any users with who want to create and customize images and videos from their desktop.

"Grab That Video!"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 6.0.4
Pros
Performs as advertised for capturing Video with Sound.
Cons
Configuration is set for No Audio by default. Not a major deal to figure out the interface then check the Capture Sound box.
Summary
I needed to record a Webinar- Google suggested Camtasia and Replay products, but I really didn't want to spend $40.00 or more for the software.
I own other Ashampoo software and have been happy with their stuff, and I vaguely remembered that they had a capture product from a promotional e-mail they sent me a while back.
I went to their site and read about Snap 6 which sounded like it would do the job for me. Nice price too: $19.99
For kicks I Googled "Snap 6 coupon" and found a RegNow/DigitalRiver link and bought it for $10.39USD. Such a deal!
SUMMARY: Snap 6 is a very useful & functional capture program. My need was to record a Webinar. I was able to define the portion of my screen I wanted to capture and the software worked perfectly.
Kudos to Ashampoo for making some very cool software available at a very affordable price! Like anyone else I would have loved to get it for free, but on the other hand the price I paid was extremely reasonable and will hopefully encourage and enable them to develop new offerings.
CONFIGURATION NOTE: I'm running Vista Home Premium on a webcam-equipped laptop. After I got Snap 6 to capture the audio as well as the video I discovered the microphone was also being recorded. Had to go to Control Panel to kill the volume on the mic and all is well. -
"Incredibly useful screen snapshot utility"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 6.0.4
Pros
Full-featured, works well and gets the job done
Cons
Confusing at first. It's not particularly intuitive
Summary
All in all it's a very useful utility but lack of intuitiveness makes it difficult for 1st time users.

"SNAP 6 Purchase brings SPAM!"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 6.0.3
Pros
Minimally better then SNAP 5
Cons
Constant Service Message popup on every boot
Brain dead marketing department constantly promoting product upgrade from versions 3 & version 5 now and ever since initially upgrading to version 5!Summary
Considering there is no quality control for the email responses they send (my 6 year old grand-daughter does better) support takes days and not correct or helpful and the spam-ware installed with the software I'm ashamed I upgraded!

Version: Ashampoo Snap 6.0.3

If you need to capture screens or videos on your PC, you'll find Ashampoo Snap 5 a worthy software tool.
Cons
Found none :-)
Summary
Snap 5 is an amazing piece of software to capture anything.

"Not worth the money!"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5.1.2
Pros
Anyone can do a screen capture however Capture Freestyle Region & Rectangle work well.
Cons
Capture Scrolling Window (Freestyle & Website) Don't work!
Capture Scrolling Window (Website) did work in Snap 4 what happened?
Using the latest browser versions of Chrome, Firefox & Pale Moon.
Capture a video is worthless. Help for any issue doesn't exist.
Children without a clue wrote the help files and did not have supervision.Summary
They are most interested in getting you to buy all their other programs which I wouldn't advise considering.
-
"Problematic software."
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5.1.2
Pros
Capture's still screenshots no probs, but why bother, when you can do this same function by using the print screen tab and saving to paint... which is free.
Cons
Video capture wont work, tried initially the default settings then every other codec setting, but just constant black void screens... totally frustrating... also the tool bars, left & right were sporadic in their appearance, when you finished recording your video clip(attempting to) you can either hit pause/break or click on the top tool bar - exit/stop edit and this action should automatically bring up all the editing tool bars, however only sometimes they would appear, either both left/right wouldn't appear or the right toolbar would appear and the left one was hidden somewhere... very glitchy software.
Summary
I purchased this software so i could make personal music compilations by recording my favourite artists from obscure rare dvd's... however Ashampoo Snap 4 wont record anything from my pc dvd player or youtube files, thought maybe my copy was faulty, so uninstalled it then reinstalled it... but to no avail... looked at help/faq's however just says if you have difficulty capturing video then try another codec... tried all, and still no joy??? ...anyone got any tips, as would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

"did not meet my needs"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5.1.2
Pros
cheap software
Cons
need for video capture what's on my screensaver, capture is actually done, just not the same quality, the video is stopped, I tried all kinds of settings, without success.

"Best Screen Capture I've used"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5.1.2
Pros
Handy, quick and many features.
Cons
I too was unhappy with the frequency that I accidentally brought down the tool bar by having my mouse near the top of my screen, until I discovered the setting to put it on the right side of the screen(bottom or right too)...no more issues.
No cons for me.Summary
The best value in a very good screen capture program on the market.
-
"The userinterface is great"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5.0.2
Pros
The tiny bar at the top of the screen works always
The interface at the sides (after taking a shot or making a Video) is perfectCons
The tiny bar at the top gets hit (by accident) too often.
Summary
I said it in the pros. I used Gadwin (FREE) before, but this product is much more flexible.
The most easy thing to use is: the printscreen button on your keyboard. It copies the desktop and shows the righthand menu where you can select almost anything you want: save, delete, print a.s.o.
The bar at the top gives a wide range of different possible screenshots and a way the construct videos of your desktop as you perform various actions there.
