CNET Editors' review
While we normally appreciate user guidance, the pop-up how-to guides got in the way of what proved to be an effective tool for capturing and manipulating images.
Ashampoo Magical Snap adds an expandable toolbar to the top of your window that lets you capture entire Web pages or specific selections. It also captures desktop and window screenshots--basically anything that appears on your screen. Once you make a selection, pop-up how-to guides walk you through the editing process. We found them a little overwhelming, and appreciated the option to turn them off. Once you capture an image, the toolbar smartly changes to offer more editing options, and two other expandable toolbars are added to your window for more editing and saving options. We were able to quickly capture whole or partial screens, add basic elements, rotate, and resize the image. Results are saved to your location of choice.
Much like the how-to guides, the Help file is extensive and overwhelming. But once you get the hang of the program enough to not need the guides, it is much easier to navigate. Ashampoo Magical Snap offers a short 10-day trial period, but if you request a promotional code, it gets bumped up to 40 days. Once you get down to using this smart screen capture tool, you'll like what you see. We recommend it to any user with a need to create, customize, and save images.

"Problematic software."
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5 5.1.2
Pros
Capture's still screenshots no probs, but why bother, when you can do this same function by using the print screen tab and saving to paint... which is free.
Cons
Video capture wont work, tried initially the default settings then every other codec setting, but just constant black void screens... totally frustrating... also the tool bars, left & right were sporadic in their appearance, when you finished recording your video clip(attempting to) you can either hit pause/break or click on the top tool bar - exit/stop edit and this action should automatically bring up all the editing tool bars, however only sometimes they would appear, either both left/right wouldn't appear or the right toolbar would appear and the left one was hidden somewhere... very glitchy software.
Summary
I purchased this software so i could make personal music compilations by recording my favourite artists from obscure rare dvd's... however Ashampoo Snap 4 wont record anything from my pc dvd player or youtube files, thought maybe my copy was faulty, so uninstalled it then reinstalled it... but to no avail... looked at help/faq's however just says if you have difficulty capturing video then try another codec... tried all, and still no joy??? ...anyone got any tips, as would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

"Best Screen Capture I've used"
Version: Ashampoo Snap 5 5.1.2
Pros
Handy, quick and many features.
Cons
I too was unhappy with the frequency that I accidentally brought down the tool bar by having my mouse near the top of my screen, until I discovered the setting to put it on the right side of the screen(bottom or right too)...no more issues.
No cons for me.Summary
The best value in a very good screen capture program on the market.
