    "Huge problems with Safari 4.0.3"

    September 16, 2009   |   By macguruguy

Version: Apple Java for OS X 10.5 Update 5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Having huge problems with Safari 4.0.3 since this update. G4 with 1.6Ghz upgrade. Getting constantly spinning beachballs when Java is accessed on certain pages. Have to force quit. A sad disappointment Apple because this only affects YOUR browser. Firefox and Opera working fine. You guys are so wrapped up with Snow Leopard and iPhone that you don't care about anyone else that uses your products.

    "WARNING !"

    June 17, 2009   |   By grh-akl

Version: Apple Java for OS X 10.5 Update 4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Intel MacBook Pro, OSX 10.5.7, Safari 4, Java already turned off in Safari prefs. System stable and everything working properly.

    Install this Java update

Safari no longer goes anywhere. Crashed every time I attempted to go to any URL

Tried everything including repair permissions, Disk Warrior, trashing Safari prefs

In the end, I had to do a complete system re-install, omitting this latest Java update in Software Update. Everything now works ok again.

    "Java 1.6 still not supported"

    October 29, 2008   |   By werfblau

Version: Apple Java for OS X 10.5 Update 2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As Apple states in the release notes, 1.6 is supported on 64-Bit Intel Macs only. This says, that Apple does not support other Apple-architectures anymore: We cannot expect Java-developpers to downgrade for all the future to 1.5 for just one specific OS. Weâ??ll loose viable applications due to the lack of support from Apple.
A remark to â??used for less than a month": Iâ??d like to use 1.6, but I cannot since it doesnâ??t exist for most of my machines. 1.5 works so far - but itâ??s not an excellent implementation, too.

"WARNING: Do NOT Modify Your System!"

    November 17, 2005   |   By amcgee

Version: Apple Java 2 SE 5.0R3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Several people on VT and in other forums have given a list of instructions on how to modify your system so that Java 1.5 (5.0) is the default under OS X. Unfortunately, they forgot to warn you that making such a modification to your system is considered to be a hack by Apple, and while it may appear to work OK now, it can possibly cause serious problems with future system upgrades.

In order to SAFELY make Java 1.5 the default, you should NOT, I repeat, NOT delete or change any system files or symbolic links, but instead use the NON-DESTRUCTIVE methods of:

    (1) Modifying your system environment variables for Java, so that the 1.5 command-line tools and applications are found first. You do this by modifying your .profile or .bash_profile and adding these two lines:

    export JAVA_HOME="/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Home"
    export PATH="${JAVA_HOME}/bin:${PATH}"

Now when you type "java -version" at a command prompt, you will get 1.5 as the default, and it will apply in all your terminal sesssions.

    (2) For web applications and Java apps that need the VM, use this program to change the default VM that gets used:

    '/Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Preferences.app'

Move 1.5 to the top of the listing above 1.4, and it will become the preferred VM. It's just that simple.

Those are the ONLY two things you should do to make 1.5 the default. All other methods that involve deleting files, changing symlinks, etc., are dangerous and should be avoided.

More info about this can be found on MacOSXHints:

"I Can Finally Access My Bank Account!"

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'm so pleased that Apple released this implementation of J2SE 5.0. At long last, I can access my bank account information without trouble. This has been such an inconvenience in the past. I'm very pleased with this update.
