Back when disk drives were huge in size yet minuscule in capacity, duplicate files were like coronary blockages, a growing problem that could crash the system at any time. Programmers responded with duplicate file finders, which had a bad habit of misidentifying duplicates. Today, duplicate files are more like stubborn body fat, your PC's "love handles": Not exactly welcome, but too much trouble to remove. Good thing the programmers aren't taking it lying down! For example, there's AllDup from Michael Thummerer Software Design. It's a free duplicate finder that seems to have an answer for every question, at least those pertaining to finding and rooting out duplicate files, wherever they hide.

AllDup's default interface displayed our drives and folders with checkboxes to select them for searching. Log and Profiles buttons are handy if, for instance, you regularly upload a lot of snapshots from your camera. We were impressed by numerous options for configuring, filtering, and displaying search results, most customizable via buttons with labels such as Add, Enter Text, Replace, Edit, Open, Remove, and Check. Despite its extensive filtering and targeting options, AllDup proved pretty easy to use. Starting with the Pictures folder on the C drive, we applied it to several drives, finding not only duplicate images and media files but also multiple copies of some programs and updates in different download folders. As with all responsible duplicate finders, it can move files to a safe folder for review before you delete them. AllDup has some nice extras, such as the ability to add an entry to Explorer's context menu, to designate external programs like Word for tasks like file comparison, and to specify plug-ins that the preview pane will use to display certain file types, such as media files.

AllDup seems to have things covered when it comes to comparing files by name, size, extension, and attributes--even byte-by-byte Content analysis--as well as excluding things you want left alone. Of course, all the options in the world are useless if you don't take the time to go through them, but we found AllDup's settings easy to handle. AllDup shows that free duplicate file finders have come a long way.

"Based on my tests this Duplicate file Finder is not bad"

    February 18, 2012   |   By TommyLarson

    Version: AllDup 3.3.25

    Pros

    This software is free

    Cons

other software tested a little better in terms of confidence, user friendliness, features and accuracy.

    Summary

This Duplicate file Finder software was not bad. I have tested this software with over 20 different other Duplicate file finder softwares on download.cnet.com and I give this software 3.5 stars because other software tested a little better in terms of confidence, user friendliness, features and accuracy. Keep in mind that only 2 of the 20 Duplicate file finder softwares that I tested were better than this software; other Duplicate file finder softwares just failed miserably. In my opinion "DupKiller" and "Fast Duplicate File Finder" tested better than this software. Based on my tests this software did a better job comparing to some "Duplicate file Finders" which were not free. That was very surprising.

In my opinion "DupKiller", "Fast Duplicate File Finder" and "Duplicate Cleaner" tested better than this software.

Let me refreeze that sentence. I meant to say: In my opinion "DupKiller" and "Fast Duplicate File Finder" tested better than this software.

    "Very Shady"

    January 22, 2012   |   By John Public

    Version: AllDup 3.3.25

    Pros

It's tough to assess a program's positives when it installs in as shady a manner as this one does; it leaves the user more interested in uninstalling immediately than testing the product.

    Cons

Extremely shady install. First, Online Armor (my current firewall app) reports that AllDup wants to install auto-loaders. That's the first red flag, IMO - what possible use could a simple utility like this have for auto-loading? It shouldn't auto-load anything - it should just sit there like a good little utility and wait for me to use it. But I could've gotten over that. Second, it wants to install a global hook. Again, what business would a simple little utility have hooking into anything else? But again, I could've gotten over that. It was the keylogger that was the deal-breaker. I don't care if it's a false positive from Online Armor - even the appearance of impropriety is enough for me to uninstall this app.

The big German flag at the top of the app's UI should be a clue here - Germans have about as close a relationship with privacy and freedom as Iran has with Israel.

    Summary

You can be a guinea pig for this app, but I say no thanks.

    "The best I found."

    December 03, 2011   |   By cak444

    Version: AllDup 3.3.14

    Pros

I needed to clean up years worth of multiple file copies on my external drive (backup copies embedded within more backups) and didn't want to mess with my current C structure. I tried 10 different dup file programs and none of them were flexible enough to allow what I needed to do. ALLDUP let me do exactly what I wanted. It allowed comparison with C, but then quickly allowed me to remove all C finds from the duplicate delete process, without worry about deleting the wrong stuff. It even removed empty folders (another option) so I could easily manage the remaining files. The interface is not fancy and might make you think this is just a toy, but actually this is a very powerful tool with many user select-able options. Other software will find your dup's but the removal choices are very limited (newest, oldest, etc.)and you will still spend a lot of time clicking through your found dup's to be sure they're what you want to delete. Not so with ALLDUP's folder opt-out tool.

    Cons

The interface is a little simplistic and the multitude of toolbar buttons are a bit confusing at first. I found it easier to use the drop down menus.

    Summary

There are some negative reviews posted but they must be from people who simply didn't take the time to learn the software. There are a lot of choices available which makes it so powerful, but if you don't make the right choice you will not get good result. Don't blame the software. Learn it. I would suggest creating some extra duplicate folders to play around on before launching yourself on the real stuff. That's what I did and now that I understand what to do, it's working great.

I am still in process of straightening out my mess, but am so happy with the way this software is working that I had to stop to write this review. This is total freeware and there are no annoying requests to upgrade. But there is a paypal link on one of the menus that I'm definitely going to use to send this guy a contribution. This is great stuff! Thank you very much Michael Thummerer.

    "Fair, but not perfect."

    October 18, 2011   |   By Rob7713

    Version: AllDup 3.3.14

    Pros

Very flexible in defining search criteria overall.

Not fast, but reasonable in its speed.

Does a goof job of finding duplicate files.

    Cons

Not as flexible or as user-friendly as I think it should be in setting things up, including search criteria. Took much too long to set up first search.

Says you can store a search result, but it can't find it if you do so.

Depending on the settings, it can be abysmally slow to complete a search.

Common problem, evidently, with having to check each file to select the duplicates to delete.

No file review built in, so slower than it should be in file deletion selection process--unless you want to delete a LOT of files you want.

    Summary

The best I have found of the duplicate file finder and deleter programs. Has several UI problems that need to be solved or improved to make it ideal and consequently slow to use in many ways. Lots of room for improvement, but still the best I have found.

"great software, did more than what I expected"

    August 20, 2011   |   By rijiboy

    Version: AllDup 3.3.14

    Pros

very fast duplicate lookups, comparing first 1000 bytes of files to figure out if they are really duplicates, ability to ignore meta tags of music and picture files, file previews so easy to verify duplicates

    Cons

options to exclude/include folders/filetypes is confusing, and once you mess that up there is no "reset" to go back to initial install settings

    Summary

I had tons of music and picture files stored in multiple file folders, so I was thinking this will help me eliminate same named files, but this goes beyond that, it picked music and picture files which were same, but were named and tagged different and spread across my 300GB drive.
Its pretty fast, specially for the kind of operation its doing, it matching bytes, not just name/filetype combination, and for that my whole drive is scanned in less than 5 minutes, I love this software. just word of advice dont mess a whole lot with folder/file include/exclude settings cause once that breaks you will get lot of unexpected search results.

    Updated on Aug 20, 2011

quick update, 300GB not in 5 minutes, in 15 minutes :)

    "Doesn't work"

    July 11, 2011   |   By Toran Korshnah

    Version: AllDup 3.3.14

    Pros

Nothing. It installs and uninstalls leaving a lot of unused files behind. I dare not deleting them, as they might ruin my system.

    Cons

Found no dups at all, while the searchfolder was full of dups.

    Summary

Do not install this soft on W7.

    "Can You Say Convoluted?"

    March 08, 2011   |   By Smeaga31

    Version: AllDup 3.3

    Pros

    It Finds duplicates

    Cons

You can't pick the sub folders you want. It's either all or none unless you create an entry. You have to create your own file mask for most file types. The user interface is cluttered. There are others that work just a well without night school. etc.

    Summary

For most people who just want to get rid of some dupes, this is way complicated and convoluted. It took me about a half hour to go through all the options. Then when I ran it against my other dupe finder, it had no more results then my original program. I am a former software developer/programmer and I have learned simpler is almost always better than bloat. This has lots of bells and whistles but in the long run doesn't work any better than simpler programs out there.
