• Anything non trivial is really difficult

  Presentation of features seems great until your generated installer doesn't behave the way you expect it to. Hours are wasted trying to make your installer behave because you have to build > run > uninstall > repeat which is a very long test cycle when you have to repeatedly test unexpected behaviour.

  Uses MSI. They boast that is an advantage but the MSI in general has many problems.

  Summary

  Yet another installation builder that claims you can build an installation in minutes using simple drag and drop. I'm almost tempted to ignore products that make that claim. The truth is: if your idea of an "installation" is just to copy a few files onto the target machine, then yes - you can build that quite quickly. But to be realistic, if you are developing heavy-duty apps that need elaborate installation, there is not going to be any pie in the sky. You are going to have to sweat a bit. Advanced installer makes you sweat a lot because it it is primarily "state" based. In a larger sense what it does is to look at the state of the developers machine, and make it very easy to recreate that state on the target machine. Kind of like the transporter in "Star Trek". Whatever was here, is now there. Bingo. But such an operation is rarely practical or useful. There are always a thousand "what-ifs". If this condition then do that. If that condition then do this, etc. Advanced Installer, like most MSI-based installers is very weak in this area. Fine manual control of the install process is very difficult. But like I said, for straightforward stuff, it works well.

  Pros

  Complete feature set to build complex installation programs. Very reasonably priced when compared to other install builder packages with comparable features.

  Cons

  The only con I could think of is that the installation programs generated include any prerequisite files creating large file sizes. This is not really an issue for me as I include the program file for each feature with the user able to select the features they want. Each feature requires the same prerequisite.

  Summary

  I have used this program for several weeks now and absolutely love it. Some users might find it complicated but I found the documentation included in the help file very complete. I have been able to complete everything I expected and then some. I am very pleased with my purchase.

  You can't your MSI using the trial edition.
