"Saved me a ton of work!"
Version: Active File Recovery 7.3.111
Pros
Tried 3 other file recovery programs on a nonbootable drive- none of them worked. Demo version of this program found my files, but couldn't recover them correctly. Decided to buy the full version for $34.95 which worked perfectly.
Cons
There is nothing I can complain about with this product.
Summary
This program worked great on my non-bootable hard drive hooked up as an external drive to my laptop. It didn't take long to search using the Quickscan function and my recovered files work great (including my important Quickbooks file). Highly recommended!

"Easy to use, works great, trialware has 65k file size limit."
Version: Active File Recovery 7.3
Pros
User friendly interface, simple to navigate.
Have tried three other file recovery utilities in the last three days. This is the best.

"One of the better file recovery programs."
Version: Active File Recovery 7.3
Pros
Having tried a couple dozen, I settled on this one. Why? Because it works as described, can be installed on removable storage devices like my 4Gb travel drive and my 500 GB Maxtor one touch external hard drive. It's a simple to use program that not only can search for multiple files and file types but a can hunt a particular file or folder which I fine it's best feature. All my hard drives are NTFS file type drives and Active @ works great on all. Even the price, compared to others is good.
Cons
Only one con from me! The free trial limitations. However, it does what I need and accomplished everything I purchased it for.

"Saved me"
Version: Active File Recovery 7.1 build 301
Pros
My daughter spent 10 days in Japan on an exchange program, took a huge number of photos, but one of her SD cards was accidentally reformatted. Unfortunately, she saved a couple of new photos before realizing the problem.
Active@ File Recovery found all the photos and recovered at least 80% of them. For $30, it was a screaming bargain.
I am once again my little girl's hero.
I love the other response of "only works if bought". For free, it will tell you what it can recover and then will tell you to pony up if you want to actually recover the files. I consider that fair.
Re: the "expensive" comment, the other product I found that was able to recover the files was $80, so the competition appears to be much more expensive. Perhaps if all you need is a simple "undelete", freeware would be fine, but I needed something that would recover files from a format AND it had to work with something other than a simple hard disk.
Cons
The interface is not as intuitive as it could be, but a bit of playing with it eventually got me what I needed.

"Outstanding"
Version: Active File Recovery 7.1 build 301
Pros
A couple of days ago I had to reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows. Unfortunately I'd completely forgotten to backup up my entire collection of photographs which were stored on my D partition. That's about 5 years of birthdays, family events, parties, family visits, even little things like pictures of our new puppy and days out at the zoo. The lot, gone.
I tried several other programs and none of them managed to find my photos.
One go with the demo version of Active@ and it found my entire D partition, untouched and undamaged.
Yes I had to pay $29.95 to recover the files, which is about £15 there or thereabouts. Was it worth it? Most definitely.
Cons
I can't say a bad word against it. I didn't even need to read the help documentation before using it. It was so easy.

-
"Expensive!"
Version: Active File Recovery 7.1 build 301
Pros
Seems to recover but you have to pay.
Cons
Why do these programs cost so much? No free trial? How can I get my data back for free? Why doesn't microshaft include these types of programs?
