Active File Recovery enables you to recover files that you've accidentally deleted or that were lost for any number of other reasons. With clear options and quick scanning functionality, this app will have your files back in your hands in no time.

Pros

Superscan: Files that can't be recovered with the Quick Scan feature can often be unearthed by breaking out the Superscan. This is especially useful for items lost due to deleted or damaged partitions, and while it does take a little longer to run, it is adept at finding files you never thought you'd see again.

Good for beginners: This app is a good choice for those with limited computer knowledge, thanks to its clear interface and helpful descriptions of the types of files recovered. But that doesn't mean it's lacking in the power features that more advanced users are looking for.

Cons

Hidden features: These power features are not always easy to find, however. While the initial scanning options are presented in a straightforward enough way, the recovery process is less clear, and taking advantage of advanced features can be a little confusing.

Bottom Line

Active File Recovery is a good option for most users, whether you consider yourself a computer pro or are just starting to learn your way around. You can try out the scanning capabilities of the software for free to see if it can find the files you're looking for, and you can even recover one small one without purchasing the full version.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Active File Recovery 14.

"Worked great!"

 |  Version: Active@ File Recovery 14.5

Pros

Although Windows reported the the disk was unreadable, this program displayed all of the files and identified which were deleted/lost and which were not.
You can also search by file extension to locate specific file types, such as pictures.

Cons

As the editor review stated, you have to search a bit for the advanced recovery features.

Summary

Desperate, I bought the Ultimate version for $75 USD. I also paid $15 for a CD-ROM, which didn't arrive. They sent me another, which finally arrived. It's been a month since I used the program, so the details are a bit fuzzy. This I remember; I tried a number of other programs, none of which worked. This program was a lifesaver.
