Editors' Review

+

AOMEI Backupper offers backup and restoration services with its easy-to-use application. The streamlined design and fast response of this program are excellent, but the lack of features offered in the free version of Backupper may be disappointing.

Pros

Quick performance: We tested the speed and precision of AOMEI Backupper and noted that backups were very fast; our 18GB partition drive was backed up in under 30 minutes. The restoration process took only a few seconds, and all files were preserved accurately.

Top-notch support: Very few free programs offer as much support as AOMEI Backupper. The video tutorials, FAQs, and how-to guides presented more information than we'd expected, and the activity of the support forums was phenomenal, with many postings occurring as we tested this program.

Straightforward design: Although the program window is smaller than we'd like, the interface is smooth and easy to use. A small number of tabs eases using this program, and each feature takes you through a step-by-step process to ensure success.

Cons

Limited features: AOMEI Backupper performs very well, but we were disappointed that you have to pay for additional features like the ability to combine multiple backups into one. The advertised benefits of the paid version seem limited, so we would take caution before purchasing the additional tools.

Bottom Line

AOMEI Backupper is a responsive and excellent program that offers much more than the standard free application. We recognize the value of this software, but we recommend that AOMEI Backupper add the ability to schedule backups. All the same, this is a high performance application, and we suggest that you download AOMEI Backupper.

"Restore does not preserve file time stamps."

September 14, 2014  |  By jackg_tor

 |  Version: AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.0.2

Pros

Nice, well-designed interface and good functionality for a free program.

Cons

As stated in the forum (http://www.aomeitech.com/forum/discussion/comment/3029#Comment_3029) and I verified myself, restore operations set the time stamps of all files to the current time instead of to their original times. I want my backup programs to preserve every possible attribute (e.g. time stamps, permissions) so, to me, this is a fatal flaw.

"Thoroughly impressed!"

September 07, 2014  |  By LGM

 |  Version: AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.0.2

Pros

Has all basic and important options and features, isn't a resource hog, has a nicely designed interface, easy to use, runs without mistakes, and it's free!

Cons

None that I can think of ... seriously.

Summary

For a drive imaging and backup application, this one is excellent. It has all the basic options and features I need, runs quickly on my older underpowered laptop, has a nice interface (unlike a lot of utilities and free software), and ran without any issues in my tests.

I was moving from XP to Windows 7 on my older laptop, had to backup all the data, and so looked into current options. EaseUS choked on my laptop as it is a resource hog. It simply wouldn't run. I tried to use the latest Acronis True Image but it refused to install because it detected remnants of an older version which I had uninstalled awhile back. This is a common problem with Acronis products. I tried to use their recommended cleaning utility to wipe off the older remnants but it made my machine unbootable (had to boot using the last known working configuration option which thankfully worked).

I am so glad I found this AOMEI solution and couldn't believe it was free and this good. It even lets you create a bootable rescue CD. This way you can restore backups to your hard drive without having to boot into Windows. It comes in handy in an emergency.

So thanks a lot to the developer for not only making something that works so well, but allowing home users to have it at no cost. Anyone looking for a solid backup solution needs to at least give this a try. It's wonderful.

"Version 2 is SUPER"

August 22, 2014  |  By StockVu

 |  Version: AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.0.1

Pros

Free Backup Software keeps you out of trouble. In Restore Mode, you can see all your Hard Drives and navigate with confidence. IMO, no one is doing it better.

Cons

I see none

Summary

I always judge a BackUp program by how it functions in stand-alone Restore Mode. When you can't boot, you need a tool that -helps- you find your Backup Image as well as your Target Drive/Partition. I think no one is doing this better than AOMEI.

Version 2 steps up with a WinPE Restore that can run from CD/DVD and USB!! I choose the USB version because it loads quicker. After booting into WinPE, you'll see the same friendly User Interface AOMEI provides while running in backup mode.

I love this software. It performs better that ANY backup software I ever paid for. I've been using Windows O/S since 1988.

Hmmm, cannot edit out the part about Win O/S. I should have said I was using MS O/S since 1988. Sorry for any confusion.

"Best Program of Its Type"

July 05, 2014  |  By Black Dragon

 |  Version: AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.0.1

Pros

Can do Full Backup Image, Differential, AND Incremental. ONLY FREE one that support s ALL 3. And contrary to a previous poster, it DOES backup OPEN FILES. Just make sure to check your config to be using VSS.
Oh, and as od v2 it also now allows individual file/folder image backups.

Cons

NONE AT ALL.

Summary

Best imaging program of its type and is free to boot. Just can't be beat for features alone in the free version. Other freebies only let you have a limited number of functions as to type of backup. Won't mention names, but one freebie has ONLY Full or Differential. Another has more but limits the compression level available as well as has serious issues with VSS. And of course another ONLY has full backups only. I positively hate severely neutered freeware.

"a really good backup and restore freeware"

June 25, 2014  |  By yywm

 |  Version: AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.0.1

Pros

1. backup different matters: files, folders, system, disks and partition;
2. partition and disk clone;
3. special utilities: image checking, bootable media creating and image exploring;
4. all kinds of backups: full backup, incremental backup and differential backup;
5. a schedule backup frees us from repeated boring backup work.

Cons

except it's not supporting the backup of the being using files, it is all acceptable for us users.

Summary

it is a fast freeware to keep our data safe!

"Hosed my system drive (the source drive)"

June 18, 2014  |  By PCMartin

 |  Version: AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.0

Pros

* Free
* Apparently it works for other people

Cons

* Rendered my system drive (the SOURCE drive) unbootable and unrepairable -- unforgivable in a backup/cloning utility

Summary

Just built a new system, with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional installed in UEFI mode on a single-partition 4TB GPT drive. Spent nearly five hours installing Windows, drivers, and downloading and installing Windows updates, and a few essential utilities and apps.

After ensuring that the system worked fine and was repeatedly bootable, wanted to clone the system drive to have a spare, relatively pristine, "baseline" Windows system drive on hand in case Windows on the main system drive became too badly corrupted to fix. Installed AOMEI Backupper Standard (free) and ran a "Clone" operation from my system drive (source) to a backup drive (target). Operation reported as successful.

Attempted to reboot to the target drive, but it was unbootable. The clone hadn't worked. Attempted to reboot to the original SOURCE drive, but it, too was unbootable. Attempted to repair the source drive, but Windows Recovery Console reported that it was unable to repair "this version of Windows."

Had to reinstall Windows, drivers, updates, utilities, and apps from scratch.

Thanks, AOMEI. I'm looking elsewhere. If there are hidden gotchas and system requirements to avoid this, they have to be checked by your application and the application must not run if they are not met. And in no event should a backup/cloning utility be able to corrupt a source drive and render it unbootable.
