Zimbra Desktop for Mac presents itself as an offline reader for online content, aiming to keep your e-mail, calendar, contacts, and social media accounts centralized in one app. Even though functional, the app suffers from buggy performance and an unattractive interface.

Installation was accomplished by a .PKG installer script and was pretty quick, given the downloaded file's large size. Setting up Zimbra Desktop for Mac was also rather painless. Though it suffers from an uninspired design, the app's interface is nevertheless very intuitive. We chose to sync our Gmail account with this app--a small matter of entering our username and password--though any IMAP or Exchange account is supported. We opted to sync our calendar and contacts at the same time. While our Gmail was syncing with Google, we also attempted to sync our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Setting up the Twitter account was easy, but nothing in our feed showed up in the app's reader. The attempt to sync Facebook launched our Web browser and brought us to a page that displayed a 404 - File not Found error. Everything in Gmail worked smoothly, though, and when we took our test machine off the network, we verified that we were still able to see everything in our Inbox and Sent Mailbox.

Zimbra Desktop for Mac's ability to sync and take your e-mail messages offline makes it a very useful tool for anyone who relies on e-mail, and if the developers can work out the bugs with the social networking sites, the app could become indispensable for a lot of users.

poor search, limited file atachment, ie the localhost webbased interface brings some limitations

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I am looking into an IMAP-alternative, and Zimbra Desktop was easy enough to install. You do need to have the correct account settings, of course, but I had no issue with them (which I did in Entourage!). The overall feel is of a Windows-app, but it runs very smoothly imo. There is no unified Inbox-view, as Mail has, nor a way to see three panes on one level. I have not yet found a way to import Zimbra messages into Devonthink's database system. However, I still like the app after about a week of use. What may stop me from using it long-term is iCal integration, which is essential to me, if only because of the iPhone.I may have to look into the Zimbra suite, which allegedly has iPhone syncing, and is free for individual users.

Only app that can write and read email yahoo mail without being Yahoo Plus subscriber. Can handle multiple mail.

- Probably the only mail client that can handle Gmail's conversations - Nice and easy setup - Calendar syncs with web calendars
Cons
- Uses a whole lot of resources - and is therefore impossible to have it running in the "background" - Boring themes/designs - Getting error message when trying to import contacts from Outlook - Just a few languages
Summary
This could have been a great product. Just too bad that it makes it hard to use your PC while Zimbra is running! It demands way way way to much resources from the computer's processor - actually Outlook runs much easier. Not good enough, Yahoo!!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />i'm using the yahoo zimbra desktop 9.0, and it works amazingly well. it's an offline reader for your yahoo account. stores all your emails, in a clone of the website's gui. i just leave this running and never go to mail.yahoo.com again. you can reply, sort mails, delete, mark spam... all the features but offline. changes synchronize on next check. brilliant stuff. also has some integration with addressbook, calendar etc, which i don't use.
