Pros
Comprehensive instructions: Waze offers the most detailed navigation instructions we've seen in any mapping software. Google Maps and Apple Maps pale in comparison.
Real-time traffic info: Through Waze, you're alerted to car accidents, road closures, police officers, and other obstacles between you and your destination. During testing, we received numerous alerts about accidents or drivers stalled on the shoulder up ahead. If things are too messy, Waze will reroute you.
Cheap gas: If you need to find a cheap gas station, chances are high that your fellow Waze drivers have added one to the app.
Social: Sync your contacts and add your Facebook friends, and you'll be able to send your estimated arrival time to friends and family.
Smart reminders: Sync your calendar and Waze will tell you the optimum time to head out based on current drive times.
One-touch selections: From your Map page, expand the pop-up window at the bottom to calculate alternate routes, send your ETA, or add a stop to your trip with the touch of a single button.
Reduced battery consumption: With the latest update, Waze uses far less of your battery. When you're inactive, press the power button on the top right of the search page and Waze will put you in Sleep Mode, which uses no battery. Just press Wake Up on that screen to resume.
Cons
Too much requested of you to start: To set up Waze, you must allow Waze access to your location, sign away your driving data, provide your phone number, provide access to your Facebook or an email for log-in, and accept push notifications.
Overwhelming number of icons onscreen: If you're in a dense area, you may be overwhelmed by all the icons, standing for other Waze users, police officers, traffic lights, gas stations, and so on. The good news is that you can turn off icons under Display Settings.
Bottom Line
Waze continues to impress us with its turn-by-turn instructions and growing conveniences, such as smart reminders, one-touch selections, and reduced battery consumption.
