Based on this pre-release version, TrackMania combines racing, sim, and puzzle elements to create an extremely entertaining game. It is broken into challenges, track building, and multiplayer competition. Challenges are solo puzzles in which you must create a course from start to finish, including mandatory checkpoints, and drive it under a certain time to earn medals. You use those medals, or coppers, to purchase more parts from the catalog to create your next track. The multiplayer portion lets you compete on your track against local or online players. The full version of the game promises 300 building blocks, including ramps, jumps, and turns, but this early version has much less.

The actual racing is incredibly fun, but it is arcade-based, which may turn off those looking for realism. Driving employs the four arrow keys. Pressing the Enter key respawns your car to its last position if you go offtrack. Track building is logical and easy to learn, but camera control should be more flexible. Graphics are impressive in the driving mode, but it's the endless variety of tracks that makes the game so appealing. Already some amazing creations are online. Finally, this beta version of TrackMania has slight stability problems.

TrackMania is a cutting-edge blend of arcade, simulation, and puzzle games. Using the simple and intuitive editor, players can let their imaginations run wild and build their own crazy tracks, modifying them block by block, to create complex and spectacular tracks. Then, when the tracks are completed, players can test their creations in real time and experience all the fun and excitement of high-speed racing.

TrackMania offers a choice of three distinctive gaming environments: desert, countryside, and snow. Each location has its own unique vehicles and handling controls, and players must learn to adapt their driving techniques to master the tracks in each of the different environments. Players are given a choice of more than 300 blocks, from basic straight blocks to adjustable corners or sloping blocks. It is possible to build increasingly impressive tracks of up to a staggering 2,000 blocks. One of TrackMania's best features is the opportunity for players to create and share infinite original tracks.
