Editors’ Review
Torch Browser for Mac integrates many media features, such as downloading torrents without a built-in torrent client, saving videos from YouTube and other similar sites directly to your computer, and sharing on popular social networks. The application performs most functions flawlessly, but it doesn't always succeed in downloading videos found on the Web.
Torch Browser for Mac installed painlessly, and the package installer even imported the bookmarks from the other browsers on our test machine. Its interface is nearly identical to Google Chrome, but buttons are added at the top of the browser window. These added buttons are the features that this browser highlights, such as Share, Media Grabber, and Torch Music. The Share option allowed us to share on Facebook and Twitter without a problem. The integrated torrent feature worked well, too. We went on a torrent site, picked a torrent to download, and Torch Torrent automatically started downloading. When we clicked the "Music" button, we were brought to a page displaying random albums and artists, with all the songs streaming from video services like YouTube and Vevo. The search option allowed us to perform a search based on the artist's name, album, or song, and we could play complete playlists and albums without any delays.
One of Torch Browser's notable limitations is its Media Grabber option, which is supposed to allow users to save streaming audio and video files found online. To test this feature, we first went to YouTube. The media grabber button started blinking as soon as we played a video. We clicked on this button a couple of times, but nothing happened. We tried multiple videos but still had no success. We checked our Downloads folder, but nothing was there. However, when we went to Vimeo and tried to download a random video, the download was completed without any issues. The only noticeable difference was that the Vimeo file had an MP4 extension, while the ones we tried on YouTube were FLV files.
Comparison with Microsoft Edge
Torch Browser offers attractive features to media enthusiasts but falls short compared to alternatives like Microsoft Edge. While Edge lacks an integrated torrent downloader, it offers broader functionality through its seamless integration with Microsoft's ecosystem and support for extensions from Microsoft and Chrome Web Stores. One of Edge's standout features is the built-in PDF reader and annotation tool, which enhances productivity for general users. In contrast, Torch primarily focuses on media consumption, limiting its appeal to users seeking more versatile browsing capabilities.
Another key difference is media streaming and downloading. While Torch provides the Media Grabber tool, its inconsistency diminishes its reliability, particularly with YouTube downloads. On the other hand, Microsoft Edge does not include a dedicated download tool but supports third-party extensions like Video Downloader Professional that perform this function more effectively. Moreover, Edge includes advanced security features, such as tracking prevention and integration with Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, making it a safer choice for privacy-conscious users.
Updated features in 2024
Recent updates to Torch Browser have addressed some longstanding issues. The Media Grabber feature now supports more video formats, including FLV and MOV, with an improved success rate for popular platforms. Additionally, Torch Music has introduced curated playlists and offline playback options, expanding its utility for music lovers. Despite these enhancements, the browser's limited compatibility with modern security protocols remains a concern for advanced users.
Bottom Line
Torch Browser for Mac works well in most cases, but its inconsistency in key areas, like YouTube video downloads, limits its utility. It remains a viable option for users who prioritize media consumption and downloading. However, those seeking a more balanced and secure browsing experience may prefer Microsoft Edge or similar alternatives.
