• Almost found a winner...

  Summary

  If you are one of those people that just press next, next, next when installing, you are not going to be a happy chappy - thanks to the cnet installer there are about 7 different items (extra programs you don't want, stupid toolbars, homepage high-jackers, etc) that try to sneak their way into your install. Read each screen thoroughly and choose a custom install to avoid getting kak you don't want. The program itself is nice looking and highly customisable. It has a clean excel-like look to the lists which really appealed to me. I loved that you could create sub-tasks. The recurrence feature is a bit buggy though. Some examples of what I mean: - On a task that is set to recur, say monthly, if you set that current task to 50% complete and then tick it to say that you are finished, it regenerates that task a month later at 50% complete instead of 0. - If you set a parent task with say 2 sub tasks to recur annually, the regenerated task doesn't refresh the dates of the sub items. And setting the sub items to regenerate doesn't solve the problem because then they regenerate under the same parent task, not the new one. The program has so much promise, but unfortunately without the recurrence features working properly, it is all but useless to me. Such a pity - I almost found a winner.

  Pros

  If you have used other project management software? Then this one will be simplistic to use. Pertinent information is displayed on one main screen.

  Cons

  This program loads with a lot of bloatware, so be careful or you will be adding a toolbar, new startpage and a few other unwanted options.

  Summary

  No hidden malware detected. But it sure is a creepy instal. However the software seems to do what it says and does very well.

  Summary

  First - I used CNET's downloader (couldn't find a way around it), which meant I had to be careful to opt out of all the extra stuff it wanted to install along with this software. That was a pain in itself. Then instead of a standard installation, with an icon on the desktop or a "Do you want to run this software now?" message in the last screen, I got a window showing a folder inside the Downloads folder which itself was inside the My Documents folder. I have my browser set to put downloads on the Desktop so I can find them more easily, so I don't know why the installation did this. But it made it a lot harder to open the software - I had to sort through 28 files to find the one that looked like it might open the program. There were 2 EXE files but one looked like an updater so I clicked on the other one. But even that didn't open the program right away; first I had to get through a couple of other windows, one of which asked me which items I wanted it to show. Most of those didn't mean anything to me so I clicked through that window and eventually got to what I think was the main screen. But it had so many items on it that I didn't recognize, including a lot of terms and abbreviations I'd never heard before, that I decided not to go any further. Maybe I'm just out of touch with things, or maybe this program is designed for more sophisticated users than I am, but I'm not going to waste any more time trying to figure it out. I don't like to keep stuff I don't use so I'd like to uninstall it, but I can't find a way to do that so I'm just going to delete that folder with the 28 files in it.

  Fast, small, easy to use, easy to adapt to your needs, way of work (GTD, DIT,...), portable. At first it looks a little bit overwhelming, but 1. you can easily hide all the elements you do not need (even from the menues) 2. all the elements you need to get an overview and to work with the list are in one single interface, no tabbed dialogs to open ...

  Cons

  none I can think of

  Summary

  It's free, but I would happily buy it, because for everyday use it is much better than many expensive, fancy commercial programs I used before.

  Pros

  Highly configurable, networkable, found it easy to track tasks, "tight" listing (many ToDo lists put too much white space between entries and therefore do not make efficient use of the available screen), built-in hotkey access from anywhere in your system.

  Cons

  For me, none. Some people may find that the degree of customisation available is daunting but it's not in-your-face.

• Very basic and easy to use

  Pros

  I can have all my tasks displayed on one page. Can create sub-tasks, due dates and times, categories, prioritize, create statuses, allocate tasks, add links to a task, change task colour - very handy!

  Cons

  I haven't found any yet. The ability to enter multiple lines of text for each task would be a 'nice to have'.

  Summary

  Very handy tool. The fact that it is free makes it even better!!

  Simple setup. Recurring tasks. Many categories.

  Cons

  I would like the option of making the font larger. Old eyes, I guess, but it would be the only change i would make to the program.
