  I won't deny that this game is realistic, perhaps even the most realistic strategy game I have ever played. However, the learning curve is so steep and the user interface so unintuitive that I had to print out all 14 pages of documentation and play with the sheaf of paper beside my keyboard. Even with the walkthrough, the first (and only) scenario is HARD! Rather than adopting the familiar one-button interface of virtually all real-time strategy games, it uses a two-button interface like Age of Empires, though in AoE at least you can turn it off. That means that you're forever moving a unit when you mean to deselect and vise versa. Interface aside, the gameplay itself is only medeocre. Many units can actually outrange their line of sight, and there's no infantry/vehicle balance like in Command & Conquer. Tanks can kill most infantry in one shot! I wouldn't say that unit balance is poor, because that would imply that there is some. C&C had its Rangers/NOD Buggies that were good against infantry, and the Bazooka Infantry that were good against vehicles. Rangers could attack other vehicles and Bazooka Infantry could attack other infantry, but neither would do much good. Here the gameplay seems to consist of sending infantry on suicide missions to get momentary glimpses of enemy units so that your artillery can take them out. As far as I can tell from the demo, every scenario in the game is of the annoying kind where you get a bunch of units at the start of the game and have to use them to hack through enemy forces to reach a target. It may be realistic, but that doesn't make it fun.

• Where's the airpower?

  Lets start by looking at the details. While it can be fun, and addictive at times, the features just don't cut it. The graphics are good, stability is great, but there is nowhere near enough airpower available to forces as they try to beat the Germans out of the town, or whatever. Artillery is by far the most important thing, infantry is vastly underpowered. Some units can use grenades, but most are slaughtered by machine gun or tank fire, which comes very fast. Sometimes there is a lot of fire going around, things blowing up and so on, and if you are assaulting, use your light tanks first. That way you mow down the trees with the dead carcasses of your vastly underarmored tanks against artillery. The game needs more realistic weapons, and more airpower options.

  The following comments apply for the sudden strike addon, namely the sudden strike forever. The game is overall very well designed, there are very good graphics and sounds, it can run extremely well in non state-of-the-art systems (it is very playable even in a 133Mhz Pentium I!!), no 3d accelerators needed, the gameplay is very fast, however its most important features are the infinite capabilities of modding that provides. Modding is neccesary because although well designed, very playable and stable, the game is not realistic as it should be. The line of sight is small and the game is dominated by the artillery. These negative points can be corrected by modding. Some negative points are: The AI needs a lot of improvement, the editor provided by the addon offers numerous capabilities, however it often crashes back to the desktop. Overall this is a very good games whose already good features can be enhanced by modding.
