Spider Writer is an excellent HTML editor, it integrates an easy to use interface, plus FTP client and an Image Mapper. And, by the way, it also includes WYSIWYG editing and Code editing. But the bad news: It just WONT work with my Internet Explorer 6. (Overall: 4 out of 5).

Great program but it no longer works with IE6.0. It says I need to upgrade my browser to IE4 or higher. Also it requires Netscape for the external viewer yet it requires IE to install; that's silly.
Many useful features, especially for tables.

1. Everytime I close the app, it ungracefully crashes. I'm using WinNT. 2. It reformats code to make it look "nicer", but sometimes that does more harm than good. 3. The WYSIWYG editor doesn't help with Javascript and doesn't work well with forms. 4. The wizards used to create forms, tables, etc. only work on the code display and not on the WYSIWYG. I don't see the point of a tool for beginners only working in the more advanced section. Good for beginner to intermediate level HTML. The WYSIWYG is great for table cell manipulation and adding stylized text. And the option of seeing the actual code helped me learn HTML better.

One of the best HTML editors i've used yet, it's very user friendly and has a lot of features everybody, from first-timers to professionals, can easily use--really!

It's 8 legs are constantly busy helping you. It's got every feature you can('t) think of. If they also include the following 3 features, they might have the hottest editor in the universe. 1) a Script-Outliner for *.js and *.vbs files. You know : An outline of the script's functions, loop-constructs, etc is constantly updated in a window pane. In the script-outliner double-click function-name, or loop-construct, etc, and the editor window is automatically positioned to the corresponding location in the script file. (NetObjects ScriptBuilder 3 has a nice script-outliner.) 2) an integrated script debugger like in Dreamweaver 4. 3) a MAJOR SPEED-UP of the program. I can live with the 2 other features lacking. None of the other editors has both or either of them ! But I believe speed should be an FEATURE as well. I had a FRESH install of Win2K Pro (SP2) (on a PIII 500Mhz, 128MB, defragged U-ATA66 30GB HD, blah). NO other software! Just the OS and SpiderWriter. (Un)Drawing of all dialog windows (File open, Color picker etc.) WAS SLOW. Switching between larger already opened files (tabbed) WAS SLOW. After the trial period expired I checked the code with "Dependency Walker", it's written in Visual Basic 6. This explains the sluggishness !!! It's an excellent editor, but speed counts more for me. After all, you can have excellent features available, but if they are slow to use, you're not going to. That's why "Ease of Use" only deserves an "Average".
