The design of the Spanish flag was changed many times, especially during the times of Spanish expansionist policy in the 16th and 17th century. However, the red and yellow colors remained unchanged. Its fields represent Castile, Leon, Aragon, Navarre, and Grenada. Hercules columns on the sides of the coat of arms symbolize Gibraltar and Ceuta.
