Altiris Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) is a new way to use software. By placing applications and data into managed units called Virtual Software Packages (VSP's), SVS allows you to instantly activate, deactivate, or reset applications, to completely avoid conflicts between applications, and to remove them cleanly without altering the base Windows installation. Say goodbye to 'DLL Hell' and 'Registry Rot'. Getting apps and data into VSP's is simple with an included tool. This version is the same as the regular commercial product shipped by Altiris, minus the server-side components for centralized management.

Version 2.1.2084 contains the following and is recommended for all SVS customers: Workaround for a Windows registry defect that could result in a BSOD when certain reg functions are called , Fix for an IIS compatibility issue, Fixes for memory leaks that could result in impaired system performance over time.

Great tool for traceless uninstall of any software

I use it on Windows XP, and is much faster than the new Symantec Workspace Virtualization (SWV) tool! Use this lic. code for free personal use (free): b6c5a-wiy8u-e89de-c3cv4
Cons
Simpler and not so feature-rich GUI than that of SWV.
Summary
Don't forget to set global excludes (Edit - Edit Global Excludes) for your data drives/directories (and subdirs!), otherwise you get pretty strange behaviour - files or file modifications disappearing, etc.

I don't have much need for app virtualization which I can't satisfy more easily with BufferZone or SandboxIE. I just like to use SVS to monitor installers so I can repackage them from scratch. I've used WinInstall, Prism, MS SMS, and various other monitoring tools which are designed for repackaging, but they all assume that I want to start with their auto-generated packages and modify. I prefer to start with an empty package and add everything so I know exactly what's happening and I don't overlook anything suspicious or unnecessary. Those repackagers don't provide the kind of visibility I need for doing this. With SVS, it's easy to inspect captured layers.
Cons
Many people have a problem with the spartan GUI which comes with SVS, and there are several community-developered front-ends which address this, but I'm not so much bothered by the simplicity of the GUI as much as I am by the clumsiness of what's there. Menus and labels are just awkwardly worded and named. For a new or infrequent user, it's far too easy to come away with the conclusion that the product just doesn't work.

It's good if for software test and those programs do not need to create user data files. I use it to install download software and test, if I want to keep it permanently, I will remove it and install in normal way. But if you install programs which will create user data files, be carefull .... (see cons)

Few weeks before, I install the visuall foxpro and re-develop my client's program. Later I remove the foxpro, but unluckily, all my works are gone. <p>Test has been done... You install program inside SVS, and then you make some user file (flash, html, etc whatever you like), if you deactivate the program from SVS, all your works are missing, but return back when you activate it again. That's mean you can not get your most recent files if you deactivate the program. Therefore be sure you backup your files in a safe place before you remove the program from SVS, otherwise you lost everything. I am the good example, I do all the development and I remove foxpro from SVS, result is I lost all my works.

YOU CAN INSTALL A PROGRAM IN AN INDIPENDET LAYER. WITHOUT REBOOTING WINDOWS YOU CAN SWITCH ON OR OFF THE LAYER. WHEN A LAYER IS SWITCHED OFF, IT IS LIKE THE PROGRAM HAVE NEVER BEEN INSTALLED! YOU CAN EXPORT THE LAYER AND IMPORT IT ON ANOTHER PC, RESET THE LAYER TO THE FIRTS INSTALLATION STATUS, MANAGE EVERY LAYER. EASY TO USE, GREATLY SUPPORTED BY THE WEBSITE.

Virtualization allows you to run a program without it being able to actually interact directly with your OS. Have a problem? Fine. Reset the application and it is back to the way it was when it was installed.
