This simple program can help you avoid inadvertently hitting the Caps or Num Lock keys, but doesn't offer a wide range of features. Smartcaps' tabbed interface is a bit old-fashioned but fairly easy to follow. The Keys tab lets you add a delay to the Caps or Num Lock keys and set the delay before activation with a simple slider. Among its other settings, you can opt to completely disable both keys or add the Alt key to activate the Caps lock. Though the Insert Key is displayed as well, no settings are offered in this tab to control it. The Sounds tab adds an audio notification when the locks are engaged or disengaged or at start-up to indicate whether those keys are active. The final tab, Visuals, adds a taskbar or desktop indicator to show the status of the keys. Though it doesn't offer much, anyone who is regularly annoyed by unintentionally hitting these lock keys will find Smartcaps beneficial.
Control Panel is a bit hard to figure out, but you only need to do it one
Summary
Very valuable
provides the "caplock" lights missing from new netbooks
EdDundas
Pros
New laptops lack the customary indication that the cap-lock key has been inadvertently pressed. This provides an on-screen icon that can be placed discretely in a corner of the screen to provide this.
Cons
After installing, you will need to visit the setup options to select your preferences to emulate whatever type of machine you are most comfortable.
Summary
After installing this on every laptop/notebook/netbook ever owned, the only question is - "Why don't the computer makers include useful products like this on their new computers, instead of the layers crapware that typically needs to be scrubbed off before their machines become even marginally usable.
Didn't assist me
Walter Plinge
Pros
Nothing much.
Cons
I wanted a utility to control caps and especially to control 'tippages' - second letter in a word capitalised as a result of holding the caps key a fraction too long after typing the first letter. It doesn't do it.
Summary
Tried it for a few days but didn't find it useful. Even if it had been free I would not have persisted. Uninstalled. Search continues for a more useful (for me) caps control utility.
Control the response of the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys.sMaRTcaPs eliminates all of the annoyances with the Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Insert keys. It prevents all accidental touches of these keys yet still allows full functionality - each key must be purposely held before it will toggle. Optional sound notifications when each key toggles states, not just when the key is touched. Visual indicators and startup states as well. And it works in the background for all Windows 98 and later applications. Version 5.01b fixed defect in Windows 98 sounds.
