  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />This is a simple piece of SW, that does what it says on the can. BUT!! When you buy it, you are only purchasing it for use on ONE machine - with a specific ethernet address. If you need a new logic board, or you buy a new Mac, you CANNOT TRANSFER THE LICENSE. You need to pay another $10. The author makes this very clear, but be warned. Disk Utility now allows you to shred empty space - so I would stick with that.

Yesterday I downloaded (multiple times) the latest version of Shredder and stupidly trashed my old version. When I went to use or open this version of Shredder I received the message "You cannot open the application "Shredder" because it may be damaged or incomplete." Mr. DeKorte has not responded to my email requesting help. So, my advice is to keep your prior version if it's working. If you want to try the newer version, for goodness sake do not toss the prior version! BTW: I've downloaded and expanded other software yesterday so I doubt if my OS or Stuffit is at fault.

• Shreds free disk space faster than others

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Panther has the *Secure empty trash* feature, but I still need Shredder to erase free disk space on my PB. It works perfectly!! There's a little bug: It shows "x.xxx GB of x.xxx GB", but it's rather - not exactly - "x.xxx GB erased, remaining x.xxx GB". Because of this, the progress bar doesn't proceed properly. - The best Shredder since Burn 2.5 (don't have Classic any more).

It's a little buggy: e.g. using 'shred free disk space' the progress bar message becomes incoherent, and when cancelled mid way through, the message is given that the operation is complete. I bought it becuase of the price, and am happy that it's a quarter of the cost of competitors: re the machine-specificity, I could pay for three more before being out of pocket, and not many people have four macs.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />While this program works just as it is advertised to work, make sure that you aren't planning on upgrading your computer because when you do, you will no longer have access to the program that you purchased. The copy protection scheme on this program stinks. I bought a new computer and now I can't use the program unless I buy the program AGAIN!. I've already purchased the program twice because I have two machines. I can appreciate the need for trying to prevent piracy but when you can't use a program that has been legitimately obtained, it STINKS! I wrote to the author but got absolutely NO response. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt; So, make sure before you buy because you CANNOT move it to another machine if you decide to buy a new computer. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;I'll NEVER buy another program with a copy protection like this!!! And if others would do the same we might be able to eliminate this nonsense. This vehicle of feedback is the ONLY means I have to vent my frustration. That's why I rate it as low as possible in every area.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I tested Shredder by removing a load of MS Office documents that I no longer needed but find that they can be quite easily recovered by Norton Utilities (Un-Erase). Is this the case - just how do you make a file completely un-recoverable &amp; gone for good?

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />In times like these, it makes sense to be secure--even if you imagine you have nothing to hide. Shredder provides a deep, forensic level deletion of your cache and history for free, as well as any file you want absolutely gone. For the small fee of $10, you can do the same with folders. It's a sweet app, and a must for any machine used for personal as well as professional use. Also, look for the clever easter egg in the about panel (click the icon). A fine 5 star app.
