Shazam listens to music playing in the background and identifies it with impressive accuracy, telling you not only the name of the song and artist but also giving you a wealth of other information, including lyrics, artwork, artist bio, and even concert dates. What's great about it is that it also lets you play most identified tracks, as well as view related videos.

Pros

Highly accurate: Shazam proved highly accurate, quickly identifying the artist and track from a wide variety of songs ranging from classical sonatas to indie rock music. The app also did a great job at identifying soundtracks from TV shows like "Game of Thrones" or "Prison Break."

Handy secondary features: Because it includes lyrics, videos, album and artist info, artwork, and even concert listings and tickets, this app enables you to quickly access a lot of background info relevant to your newly-discovered track without having to open your Web browser or Wikipedia app. You'll especially like the Rdio and Spotify integration for creating playlists with your tagged songs and listening to them, though this feature seems to work only in the US and selected European countries.

Streamlined UI: Straightforward and engaging, the interface features four self-explanatory categories you can navigate to through sliding gestures: My Tags, News, Explore, and Chart. We especially liked the Explore screen, which features a world map with a Shazam Chart for many countries, through which you can quickly discover what music is popular regionally.

Cons

Ads: Banners show up constantly on the screen, taking up quite a bit of space. Fortunately, you can pay to have them removed.

Bottom Line

Not only effective but also aesthetically pleasing, Shazam stands out as one of the best music identifiers we've tried so far, being extremely accurate for all genres of music. If you're a music lover, this is a great app to have. You don't have to remove the ads to enjoy it; but if you do, this app really becomes a treat.
