Pros

Solid storyline: In this RPG, you play as a former legendary warrior, turned into a shadow, fighting to round up the demons you've unintentionally set free. You advance through the story, meeting companions, battling warriors, and tracking down the loose demons. As you progress through levels, you can upgrade your weapons and armor and unlock fighting styles.

Compelling graphics: The artwork uses bold lines, muted colors, and silhouettes to convey the shadowy world the main character moves through. Fight animations are smooth as you manage your character with easy-to-use controls.

Avoid the microtransactions: For $4.99, buy the Special Edition to skip microtransactions and ads, get unlimited Energy, and unlock a new chapter. Otherwise, you can earn gems by watching video ads for games.

Cons

A bit grindy: To level up, you need to fight a lot. And you need to earn and then spend Energy to join certain types of fights, either through battling for 10 minutes for each Energy or watching video ads.

Requires access to contacts: During the initial setup, the app asks for access to all your contacts but states it will access just your individual contact information and "will not access other contacts list." But really, if the game just wants access to your account name like it claims, couldn't it do that through your Google Play Gamer ID profile, which it connects to anyway?

Bottom Line

The grind can be a drag, but Shadow Fight 2 -- with its realistic fight animations and compelling storyline -- is a winning fighting game.
