Editors' Review
Rizon calculates and notifies you of the best times to take outdoor photos, based on your preferred lighting conditions.
Pros
Quick setup: Enable location info and Rizon will calculate the golden hour -- shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the sun is at such a low angle that daylight appears soft and golden -- as well as the time durations for capturing other lighting.
Minimal interface: The home screen includes a rotating clock and start and end times for your preferred lighting: Golden Hour, Daylight, Twilight, and Moonlight. Your location is up top, the date sits at the bottom, and a reminder bell is at top right.
Easy to use: Rotate the 24-hour clock face to find optimum times to shoot in your location. Reset with a double-tap. Tap your location to switch to a new location. Tap the date to explore lighting conditions on a future date. Tap the bell to set a reminder for tomorrow morning, tomorrow evening, or a custom date. Here you may also view upcoming reminders, repeat reminders, or set an alert for between 5 and 120 minutes before it's time to shoot.
Doesn't hog data: The ability to search and save locations for later when you're offline helps preserve your precious data.
Great glossary: The info-packed Glossary, under the main menu, not only defines Golden Hour, Twilight, Moonlight, and Daylight, but also tells you how their particular lighting conditions can impact photos.
Cons
No help: If you click the Help section under the main menu, all you do is create a support email. True, the app is so easy to use that most users won't need a Help section, but others may need guidance.
The distinction between a.m. and p.m. is not obvious: When rotating the clock, the only distinction between a.m and p.m. is a tiny dot on the top left of the time, so it's too easy to miss.
Bottom Line
If you like shooting outdoors, Rizon is a good companion app for finding the right light.
