Redhaven Outline helps students organize information for research, projects, and presentations. It seems to be geared toward older students, but could help anyone who needs to organize a lot of information. It's free and works well.

The program opens with an introduction in outline format, so you can get familiar with what the program does and how the outlines will look. The interface is all-business, with a straightforward File menu over a split window. On the left is the current outline; on the right are fields in which you can enter information related to the outline, including Key Words, Summary, and Notes. You can also add a link to the Reference field, which you can open directly from the program. The right-hand side even has a basic editing toolbar, so you can format the information's font size, color, and more. When you open a new outline, you'll have two nodes: the first is the main or parent node, while the second is a child node. You can add more nodes by right-clicking on the outline, which pulls up a menu to perform other tasks, like replicating nodes, as well. The File menu offers ways to search your outlines and to customize how the outlines look. By default, the outline is in MLA format. While Redhaven proved easy to use, it's worthwhile to read through the initial introduction just to get the most from the program.

For older students who need a way to organize information for school, this is a great free tool. With the options to customize the outlines, it also could be useful for anyone working on a research project.

Truly Awesome, FREE Tree Notes Organizer & Outliner
AnnieDannyJune 20, 2012
Pros
First of all, RedHaven is genuine Freeware (donations accepted but not required.) The installation was quick and straightforward. It's not a huge program either. This Notes program organizes in trees, has text formatting and can hold a huge amount of information. Amazingly efficient. I would recommend this program for writers: that's what I'm going to use it for. I have yWriter as well but I do different kinds of writing and this is the simple yet powerful organizer I was HOPING was out there - somewhere. RedHaven can handle QUANTITY, in addition to organizing little notes and ideas. It also does basic formatting: bold, italics, underline etc and font adjustments as well as left and right alignments: just enough to do the job right. The user interface is not glamorous but it's extremely easy to use. I was able to change screen font sizes and turn off the tooltips easily (I hate tooltips.) All options were handy, and the software DOES offer choices: YAY!
Cons
It does not include any capability for images, but I'm not interested in that anyway. I have other programs that can do images if necessary. The only thing that was initially difficult to find was how to adjust font size in the main Notes field. It's there, I just didn't see it right away... The FONT DIALOG box is one of the little icons in the Text Formatting console. OR you can launch the FONT DIALOG box if you right click when your mouse is in the main Notes field. There are plenty of options for making RedHaven easy to use: the Font Dialog window was the only one I didn't find right off the bat.
Summary
I love it. My new favorite Tool!
