The first mobile game from Harmonix (makers of Rock Band and Dance Central), Record Run introduces a rhythm and beat element to the runner genre. Will Record Run hit platinum, or is this game destined to be shelved?

Pros

Run to the beat: By introducing rhythm to vanilla running gameplay, Harmonix has spiced up a mostly stale genre. Enjoy some sweet tunes while you jump over obstacles and avoid danger.

Be the DJ: One of the huge draws of Record Run is the ability to import your own songs. Sing along to radio Gaga, crank it up like a true Belieber, or rock out to some Metallica. You'll appreciate being able to personalize your experience.

Cons

Local bands only: The app only lets you import songs stored locally on your iOS device. That means cloud-based music options like Google Play and Spotify are left out. It's been a while, though, since we had to fire up iTunes and sync stuff manually.

Sounds off beat: The BPM detection is hit or miss. We found that some songs sync well with the game level, while others blend into the background. Record Run seems to prefer certain genres like pop and rock over others.

Bottom Line

Record Run's concept is fantastic, but the result lacks the addictive element of past Harmonix titles. Essentially, Record Run is a runner with a music player. If the game added a basic audio editor to clip long intros, or added the ability to queue up a playlist, Record Run could become a more immersive game.

Record Run features an amazing hand-painted art style, characters with tons of personality, and moment-to-moment gameplay that's deeply musical and crazy fun. Users select songs from the music library on their device and run through levels along with their music that are created on the spot by all new Harmonix magic. Unlock content and currency through a series of exciting "missions" that track your progress and transform the city into an amazing "Groove World." Record Run also allows users to challenge their friends to song battles, fight it out on weekly leaderboards and much, much more. Note: iPod Touch 4G is not supported. Record Run does not currently support streaming music services.
