• Excellent Cross-Platform Software Solution

  Cons

  It does have bugs, like any compiler. But very rarely are they game-breaking, and RS is constantly releasing new versions (usually 4-5 times per year) to fix reported bugs.

  Summary

  In the end Real Studio is an excellent cross-platform solution for anyone from hobbyist to professional looking for a great way to develop software. Honestly, even if it's only for a single platform, it's such a great way to develop software that I would buy the Standard (single-platform) licence (which is definitely affordable) and use it for that platform. Compared to alternative software compilers, it's the easiest to pick up and go with, and can accomplish the vast majority of projects. The language is a BASIC form, but don't let the name demean the product. It's truly a powerful language, fully object-oriented and event driven. There are excellent plugins out there to greatly expand the capability of the language, and if further platform-specific capabilities are needed the OS library can be accessed. This is generally for more advanced users, so beginners don't need to worry about it but experts have it if they want it. So my recommendation? Download it and give it a shot. The 30 day trial is more than enough time to get acquainted with the IDE and language. Also, during this time, join the forums and ask questions-the user base is large, active, and helpful.   Ease of use, very extensive programming language. Fits most jobs. very helpfull staff and list- and fora- members. Helpfull documentation. Crossplatform applications for Mac, Linux and Windows and as newest part Webapplications

  Cons

  some annoiing bugs, most however are solved with workarounds or fast updates. Sometimes docs incomplete because they cann't keep up with the fast developments.

  Summary

  REAL Studio is the most exciting and most versatile fully OBJECT oriented software developping tool. Just try it and i am sure you will agree.

  Cons

  There has never been an application written that could not be improved, and that is why Real Software releases several updates throughout the year. They are constantly striving to improve their products.

  Summary

  I started in 1996 with VB 3.0., then switch later to VB 6.0. When 64 bit Windows came into use, I realized I had to make the jump to Visual Basic.Net. and would have to rewrite my apps from the ground up. Aside from the learning curve, in order to get any of my software to work, my customers would have to first download a 200 MB .Net framework file and 100 MB for the sql server. That was just ridicules. At the same time I was keeping my eye on the growth of Mac OSX, and many customers were asking for my software on that platform. I had to do something quick or go out of business. Real Studio saved the day. I could write cross platform applications that would work on both 64 bit Windows machines and on the Mac, without having to write two sets of code. The code will also work on Linux. I could take my programing skills learned from Visual Basic and immediately apply them to Real Studio. In only two short months my customers were beta testing my new apps written with Real Studio. The software is extremely intuitive. Everything is right in front of you. The Controls pane is on the left hand side of the screen. Properties are easily accessible from the Properties pane on the right hand side of the screen. The Window editing area sits right in the middle. If you need a button, drag it from the Controls pane on to the Window editing area. Double-click on the button and add your code. The Code windows and Window Editing areas are conveniently accessible from tabs on the Tabs bar. You can easily toggle back and forth from your window right to your code. The projects compile to a nice neat folder. There are no dll horrors or installing controls to the Windows System folder. There were no .Net headaches or huge files for the customer to download. On the Mac there was no need to learn Objective C, or XCode. Everything was done with Real Software. I cannot stress enough that providing a great developing tool is one thing, but offering a way for developers to quickly get help is extremely important to me. The Real Software user forums are terrific. You can post a question on the forum and you get an answer back in literally minutes, not hours, and not days. It is a friendly community of developers who are kind enough to share their expertise with those who are just starting out. The forum also provides a rich reference library that is fully searchable. Now with the ability to write Web Applications using the same easy-to-learn source code, Real Software offers a whole new opportunity for developers who can take their source code written for Windows, the Mac, and Linux and effortlessly port this code to a web application. You can write web apps that will work on the iPhone, Android, iPad and other wireless devices. If you want an easy-to-use development tool for quickly creating stable cross platform applications for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and the Web, Real Software is the application you need. I really enjoy using this product and look forward to more enhancements in the future.

  Code is somewhat bigger than VB or Delphi (but then again, there is no need for big libraries) Documentation (and examples) could be better

  Would purchase it again - better code than VB and faster. None of the .NET mess to deal with.

  Summary

  Real Studio has a lot to offer whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran. Since I started using REAL Studio I have quickly developed several apps that are currently being used by my workplace. Seems like a no brainer to me REAL Studio is the next logical step from VB6.

  1. Cross Platform Compiler. 2. Great for database front ends. 3. Quickly create desktop apps. 5. Language similar to Visual Basic. 6. Strong support for OOP. 7. Good support for version control. 8. Strong forum support. 9. Love the remote debugger.

  Cons

  1. Bug fixes only available if your subscription is active. 2. Very few component developers for the language. 3. Documentation/Examples could be better.

  Summary

  I use VB/C# most of the time and a fair amount of time with LiveCode, but RS is a great tool to have to develop a small app. I honestly don't feel RS is any quicker to develop with, but it is fun to use and the compiled app executes quickly. I first purchased RealBasic in 2006 and upgraded to the 2010 edition. For the last year the company has seemed to focus mostly on Web Edition with not many improvements to desktop development. Bottom line - RS is a great tool to have for any programmer. It won't be the right tool every time, but if you actively develop apps you will find many good uses for it as I have.

  Pros

  Built-in SQLite database driver, quick OOP development, up and running database in less than 15 minutes. Powerful set of controls. Build your own controls or extend the existing controls by sub-classing them. Add events to controls.

  Cons

  For database use you must build your own table viewer/editor or use third party plugins. For VB6-ers, off the shelf requires re-thinking the way data is presented to and handled by the user. Must build your own editable data-grid or use plugins.

  Summary

  Rich and powerful OOP programming. Fast compile for cross-platform. Documentation is reasonably good but needs improvement. Built-in SQLite database driver is a good choice and plugins for other drivers are available. Recently added reporting tool is promissing but needs more work. Lacking ready-made data-grid (or spreadsheet). Good community support but seems to be maturing away from helping beginners. Company support available. Company does listen to its users.

  - Easy to learn - Inexpensive - Very powerful - Its funcitonallity extendable with plugins - Cross-platform - Customer care and technical service from RealSoftware are friendly and very responsive - Very helpful community(forums, distribution list)

  Cons

  - The provided documentation and examples can be improved - Some controls are buggy - Not all known bugs get fixed - After your license expires you don't get bug fixes for your version anymore (bug fixes and new features are released together)

  Summary

  As a relatively new user of Real Studio and a hobbyist programmer, I can say that this product is worth of looking at. It allows to have a quick start with programming, and progressively one can go deeper into the OOP features of the language. Curently it is used by hobbyist and professional programmer alike. Although originally created for Macintosh computers, it performs perfectly on Windows (Windows XP should be avoided, though) and pretty well on Linux too. Besides, the recently released "Web Edition" (also included in the 30-day trial version) extends its cross-platform nature. Despite a few black spots (see "cons"), I would recommend this development tool to anyone looking for - an accessible way into programming - cross-platform development - a good RAD - looking for an up-to-date VB6-like environment - fun! ;)

  Pros

  It's easy to use the buildin databaseinterfaces for e.g. RealSQLDatabase. The classes are good documented and if there are questions left, the community is nearly around the clock there to answer the questions. It's fun to programm with this GUI.

  Cons

  The documentation is not really good to handle. So the finding of the documentation to special things ist not every time the direct and easy way.
