Sudoku is a fun game, and thus Pure Sudoku has a lot going for it for that reason alone. The program itself, while serviceable, doesn't do much to impress.

The interface is simple and uncluttered, but is not particularly attractive. A vaguely Asian theme frames a changing background of photos ranging from the Great Wall to Stonehenge. To its credit, the program is very easy to navigate, allowing users to start playing in a matter of moments. Pure Sudoku offers four levels of difficulty, from "very easy" to "difficult." A variety of functions, including the ability to save games, get hints, and check one's work, are available only with the purchase of the deluxe version. The free version does offer some options; users can determine whether or not the game shows duplicate numbers and can turn the sound and random background images on and off. One particularly obnoxious feature of the program is the so-called full-screen mode; this is achieved by changing the monitor's resolution settings. No thanks.

The actual gameplay is fine; Sudoku is a simple game, and the program does not complicate it needlessly. Users can inelegantly make notes by clicking on a number from the left side of the screen, and then right-clicking to place it in a game square. Overall, Pure Sudoku is neither particularly impressive nor disappointing. Users who'd like to try it should be aware that uninstallation will leave a folder in their system's program files.

Beware of virus, works but inadequate features

Several problems. 1. When installing it attempted to place the artemis virus on my system 2. When installing it tried to change my homepage to yahoo 3. The game itself works, but it doesn't allow you to enter two or more tentative numbers in a square when the choice is not yet able to be determined. So to play this game at anything beyond the easy level one must write with a paper and pencil the two or more choices for a given square. What's the point.

I like the free and uncluttered layout. The multiple levels of play are ideal so I can choose how much of a challenge I want on any particular day.
Cons
The numbers are difficult to read because the interiors are often about the same color as the background. Having solid, contrasting numbers woulld make them make much less distracting because of a reduced squinting factor. Allowing a numbers entry style like you can see on Pogo.com's free Sudoku game would also be a big plus. I'd probably quit playing the Pogo version if the Pure Sudoku entry method weren't so clunky by comparison.

the bar for choosing numbers is too far from the square and this requires too much movement from the player. a floating closed bar is more comfortable.

Lots of games at four levels of play. Best of all, I play the FREE version.

clunky ... slow moving. Requires your full attention. I am certain there are other versions that are easier to play.

Legible, a little funky, and quick to let you know you're going wrong.

Ugly backgrounds. Having a choice of solid colors would help, as some of the pictures make it harder to see the action.
