While all Web filters fall short of perfection in one way or another, at least this Firefox add-on puts control in the user's hands. ProCon Latte's multitab settings interface clearly labels all options. Even novice users should be able to implement this tool without needing instruction. Installation is easily accomplished using the usual Firefox add-on dialog. We didn't find that the program slowed Firefox or caused a huge memory grab.

The app uses three methods to filter Web browsing. The Main Filter blocks complete Web sites based on a pair of blocked word lists. One blocks sites based on words contained in the site title, meta tags, or body. The other looks only at the site URL. Both are simple text lists and the program offers simple functions to export and import word lists. You can grab a pulldown to force the filter to use one or both of the lists. The second filter method uses another easily manipulated list to allow, or white-list, select sites. To add a site to the approved list you just need to click a button on the white list dialog. The final method replaces any word found in the program's list of profane words. Again, adding words is quickly accomplished in the dialog, and users can choose what to display instead of the found profane words.

Helpful options include password access to the dialog and other easily set security options. During testing, ProCon Latte missed some profane sites, but the problem was always quickly remedied by adding to the proper filter. This freeware filter should appeal to parents and select system administrators of public computers.

Works, but flaw with support

Pros
The software works the way it is described, i.e., if a web site isn't on the white list, it won't let you access it.
Cons
If you misplace your password, like I did, you cannot get any support to reset or recover it. I understand not making it too easy to obtain or re-set the password (keeps children from bypassing the measures that their parents set up). However to offer no way to way to overcome a lapse in memory/loss of information seems a little extreme to me.
Summary
Does what it says it will, but beware.

Pros
Very easy to use. Works perfectly. You can only view sites that you specify on your whitelist. Everything else is blocked!
Cons
Only blocks sites viewed on Firefox so you'll need to hide Internet Explorer (delete all shortcuts to IE).
Summary
Ideal for parents who want to give young children computer time, but don't want them to wonder into something that might be difficult to explain....

Pros
Simple interface and choices. Block all and choose what to allow through with the option to password protect so users can't uninstall it or change the settings.
Cons
I had a problem with the redirect not working. I'm not sure if that was from me trying to wild card a site in the whitelist, but i re-rentered all the settings and it worked without a problem.
Summary
It does what it's supposed to do with a simple interface. You'd think a common task like white and black listing would be standard for any internet browser but this add-on provides that functionality with the safe guard of password protecting your settings.

ProCon Latte filters Web pages containing explicit content based on text on Web sites. ProCon Latte is a content filter for the Firefox browser. It can filter any kind of material (pornography, gambling, hacking, cracking), it can also block all traffic, making sure that only desired Web sites (set in the Whitelist) can be accessed, and includes a profanity filter, all like a parental control filter.

ProCon Latte also has password protection in order to keep other people from changing the settings.
