  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I almost hesitated to buy this software because of these shoddy reviews so I felt the need to clear things up after trying the demo and buying Powerrip 7.4.1 for my Epson R1800. It is great software and the wealth of options and quality are both exactly what I wanted for accurate low-cost proofing for press jobs. It's a little finicky to set up but once it's going, it's solid and the colour accuracy for pseudo-press proofing at home is really what sold me. I had an issue with overprints not working but the tech support responded the same day to tell me the fix for it (use Press Proof setting) and it was resolved. Otherwise Postscript 3 support from my CS3 Indesign and Illustrator are good but I have managed to get bad renderings with extremely complex files that were basically just set up to see how crazy a PS L3 job I could send to this (gradients overprinted by masked multiply with type, etc) but fortunately, for most needs it won't hiccup. Combine this program with a cheap printer profiling app/hardware like Colorvisions PrintFix Pro and you've got a great little home proofer.

ANYTHING to help me figure out how to make this awful software work. The tech support is absolutely no help. The one time (out of about 4 calls and one left message) that I actually got through to someone, they seemed almost hostile about the fact that I was having problems. There are two major issues I'm having that make this software basically unusable. The first one is that powerrip is inserting pages from completely different documents into the middle of the currently printing multiple page document, which is probably the most frustrating thing in the world. The second one is, when it actually prints the right document, the margins are so out of whack that you wonder why you're even trying to attempt creating anything aesthetically pleasing. When I mentioned the first problem to tech support, the guy was just like "it shouldn't be doing that" (um.. duh), and the suggestions he gave were the generic "clean out the print queue" "pause the epson printer" etc... Neither of those worked, so I gave up on that issue and tried to address the second issue with the incorrect margins.. He once again couldn't help me, and told me to send them an email with an example of a document that was printing incorrectly. I did this, and so much more.. Even though I sent a clearly worded, very detailed description of the problem (along with zipped up test documents and scanned in printouts..), and they sent an automated "we want to solve this quickly, but give us 24 hours" message. Its been almost a week and I havn't heard anything back. So here I am.. trying to find anything to help me solve this.. because I don't have another 300ish dollars to spend on a program that actually works. (sigh) .. And the worst part is, I have no unrealistic expectations.. I'm not trying to be William Randolph Hearst.. I just have a big gloopy inkjet printer and most of the Adobe Creative Suite (with eps files aplenty) &amp; all I wanted was to be able to print out clearer text.. I'm sure you can see why I couldn't just keep quiet about this. I'm not even using a Mac.. This is all through Windows XP.. Platforms aside, I just wanted to let anyone interested in this software know how much of a nightmare it has been for me.. In fact, I'm so frustrated that if I could go back in time, I would probably just buy $300 dollars worth of crayons and color the damn printouts myself instead of spending money, time, and patience on trying to make this junk work...

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I have spent my company's hard earned money on this software only to find out that once you actually share the printer, printing from client machines does not work properly from Quark as the fonts do not get sent to the printer. Ted Birmingham was unable to provide me with a solution, as he blames Quark, Quark blames Apple, and all fingers point back to PowerRIP. I'm sure this is a great solution if you don't want to share your printer, but in an office environment it means that you have to create a PS file of every job and drag it to the printer. What a pain! Unfortunately, the PowerRIP support folks were too busy disagreeing with each other to come up with a better solution.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />PowerRIP X would be O.K. application after some testing and fiddling around, with use for lay-outs and InDesign or Quark pre-proof visual control of layout. For serious color printing this application is grossly unsuitable! If you are pro-designer be aware of iProof "philosophy" behind so call "validation"! Simply, if you need one you will NOT get it from them in hurry or, when you need it. If you get it at all! Hardware lock, dongle is a science fiction for iProof company and so for serious printing you better go somewhere else! I did waste our company money already! Unfortunately!

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Installing it for 10.2.x was a pain. My girlfriend used it with a Epson Photo 1290. Most Jobs with Quark/Classic and Freehand 10/MX. Sometimes the printer doesn´t work â?? unplugging the USB cable fix it normaly. What the ****? After installing Panther (10.3.2) everything went worse. We can print less documents than before. Printing time is much longer (2x,3x)... what a crap! I know when there are problems everybody blames the other ... Quark, Freehand, Fonts.... and of course Quark and Freehand are rarely usable... but with 10.2.x it was less painfull. When you are able to get your print â?? colour and quality are good/very good... *** H A T E ***

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I don't currently use it as I can Print from InDesign and AI quite well but if I find I have to print from Quark more often I would definitely use this product I use to use in OS 9.1 before Adobe PressReady came out. But this works much better than it did in OS 9.1 and earlier. I'm giving it a good rating though I never found their support to be friendly. It is in my opinion about $75.00-100.00 over priced IMO but works very well! There are other RIPS for these printers but they are two or three times the price. I be curious if anyone had a bad experience using this product?
