Editors’ Review
An interactive reference tool for chemists and students, Periodic Table for Mac offers you a quick way to obtain fundamental chemistry information. It's a handy app to have, provided that you're willing to pay for it.
Pros
Different view options: The periodic table can be viewed as a basic table, one with molecular mass details, or a version with a different gradient style. You can choose what details to show on the individual boxes for the elements, including property values, atomic numbers, and an indicator for an element that has no stable isotopes.
Tables and graphs: It can display colorful tables and graphs that can be viewed simultaneously for quick comparisons. It can also generate customizable tables for various element properties.
Comprehensive and easy-to-read table data screens: Each element has its own data screen that presents everything you may want to know about it. From melting points to density and electron configurations, virtually any useful information about an element is shown on the screen.
Quick element information search: This application comes with a search tool that quickly draws out a data screen for a particular element. You can search elements by name, symbol, or atomic number.
Cons
Good Internet connection is a better alternative: Periodic Table for Mac costs $25, while upgrades cost around $15. You can get the same benefits by using free chemistry reference Web sites.
Unit of measurement viewing could use some tweaking: While the units of measurement used for the element data screens can be changed, you have to change everything individually. It would have been better if there were a global toggle that could quickly change units of measurements to a certain standard (metric, imperial, etc.).
Bottom Line
In the end, Periodic Table for Mac is basically just the periodic table and a comprehensive range of information about elements presented as an interactive application. It's certainly convenient for quick references, but seems overpriced. High resolution photos of the elements (in their magnified, naturally existing, and processed forms) could have been added to justify the price.
