At times, open source seems like an unstoppable force. Then, apps like OpenGoo come along and sully that perception. OpenGoo aims to provide you with a top-notch Web-based office suite, but instead it manages to undermine every benefit that an online productivity application like Google Docs provides to its users. The main problem is that the developers appear to have misunderstood the meaning of the term "Web-based app."

The first thing that struck us with OpenGoo was the download page, which doesn't exactly jibe with a Web office productivity suite. Nor was there an obvious application launcher, though that is another questionable requirement for such an app--programs should be immediately apparent upon visiting the site. Because of these issues, we had to use the demo during testing. It works fine, but (unsurprisingly) it's nowhere near as polished as Google Docs.

The other issue with OpenGoo lies in its open-source capability. Although there is tremendous value in this capability--as well as having access to source code should OpenGoo go down--developers have mistaken where it begins and ends. Open source should be invisible to the end users, particularly those who are interested in a Web-based office productivity suite. By making it an in-your-face feature, OpenGoo demonstrates a misunderstanding of its audience. Plus, it ends up making site navigation a chore; you're not going to get Google Docs' ease-of-use here. OpenGoo certainly has potential, but still needs work. We recommend waiting for the next version before diving in.

Matt Asay is a moron that doesn't understand what this software is for. It is a web-based office suite that YOU control. Not Google, YOU. It is very easy to set up and use.

Pros
Great time management features! Can set Tasks, Milestones and get reminder for them. Time tracking for every task. Good basic doc editing

No spreadsheets Only Basic Document Editing
Summary
OpenGoo is a great software although with some cons. Task management is well handled and no complaints here. The document editor is basic but gets the job done easily! No problems in using this software. I am amazed how the editor has not reviewed this software correctly. Just use it and you will know!
Great open source product for task and time management

Pros
Time and task management of this product, they are pretty sound. Manage your tasks, milestones and log times to tasks. Nice active development means a constant slew of new features.
Cons
The web office part of it definitely needs work. Would like some more graphic reports for time reporting.
Summary
Hitting on points that the editor ignored for some reason, Opengoo provides some great task and time management tools. You can create milestones, tasks, set dates, relate task and milestones to dates, have multiple levels of access and broad range of collaboration tools combined with some web office in one neat, free, open source tool that you can control, put it on your own server (unlike almighty Google Docs) Yes its has some cons, its no where near a web office like Google Docs but how can you really compare them? I'll let you decide that. New releases seem to happen about every other month with new features coming from the communities suggestions. It looks to be a nice work in progress and hopefully they pull out on top and keep expanding their horizon. Good Job Feng Team.
