Editors' Review

Download.com staff

ObscuraCam from The Guardian Project detects faces in images and obscures them in various ways, including pixels, masks, and total redaction. ObscuraCam protects privacy by obscuring individuals' identity, but it works with any image on your phone or tablet, so you can obscure logos, street addresses, or anything you don't want to share with the world.

Pros

Clever app: Tapping New Picture in ObscuraCam's layout opened our camera, or we could tap Obscure Photo or Obscure Video, browse to items using one of our existing gallery apps, and open them in ObscuraCam.

Clever disguise: We could "protect" the identity (if not the dignity) of individuals with the old reliable false nose & glasses by selecting Mask in ObscuraCam's scrolling menu of distortion effects.

Cons

Learning curve: Touching an image pixelates the contact area, yet you must press and hold to resize or move the selection area, causing overlaid selections. It takes a little practice.

Bottom Line

ObscuraCam's face-recognition and sizing technology worked quite well. We were able to distort eyes, faces, or whole figures with different effects with minimal time and effort.

Developer's Description

A "Visual Privacy" photo app developed with WITNESS (http://witness.org).
Ever capture someone in a photo, and later realized they may not want to be in it? Not comfortable posting a friend, family member or child's face on the internet? Tired of Facebook, Google and other sites "auto detecting" faces in your photos?ObscuraCam is a visual privacy camera photo app, that gives you the power to better protect the identity of those captures in your photos, before you post them online. Take a picture or load one from the Gallery, and ObscuraCam will automatically detect faces that you can pixelate, redact (blackout) or protect with funny nose and glasses. You can also invert pixelate, so that only the person you select is visible, and no one in the background can be recognized. This app will also remove all identifying data stored in photos including GPS location data and phone make & model. You can save the protected photo back to the Gallery, or share it directly to Facebook, Twitter or any other "Share" enabled app.** THIS IS SECOND PUBLIC BETA RELEASE OF OBSCURACAM VERSION 1.1**tags: face detection, blur, pixelize, human rights, activism, orbot, tor, privacy, obscure, obscura, privacy camera, camera, photo editor, journalist, journalism, photoshopRecent changes:- now saves to Gallery properly- can also delete source photo if desired- small fixes to user interface- better loading of camera and gallery photosContent rating: Everyone
