In the realm of reliable newsreaders, NewsShark is a top contender. It specializes in downloading large files from Usenet, preventing partial or failed downloads with a multipart Resume feature. The partial file preview features downloads, decodes, and plays the first segment of an MP3 or MPEG, giving you the chance to decide if you want to download the full file. The program supports all popular encoding formats and has sufficient speed to meet the needs of most computer users. You shouldn't have any problem negotiating the user screens with its modern-looking interface. The trial download is reasonably small but only offers limited functionality.
The manufacturer WILL NOT give support or give refunds for this piece of crapware. The software locks up when a large amount of headers are downloaded. To exit you have to end the task. You have to delete the buffer file to get it to run again. I've complained and complained. I got no help or a refund.

I used the freeware for 2-3 months before buying the program. For my purpose of mp3 downloads from multiple newsgroups, it runs great. I am running it on Win 95/98 OS loaded on PII and PIII machines.
Use it in combination with GrabIt!

Summary
GrabIt certainly is by far the fastest of the two: it allows for upto 8 threads whereas Newsshark is single-threaded. But the main disadvantage of GrabIt is (when you want to download from, say, 30-or-so .mp3 newsgroups; as I do:) )that you cannot get a combined view of articles in multiple groups. MewsShark can, although not as easy as in previous versions: in 2.0 you use the following trick: after a full update perform a 'Find' on a single dot. Then, after selecting your downloads, you still can decide to use GrabIt for some distinct newsgroups. Have Fun!
Download binary files from Usenet.NewsShark is designed to get large files in formats such as MP3, RAR, and ZIP from Usenet. Mission-specific features include a partial file preview that will download, decode, and play the first segment of an MP3 or MPEG with just a double-click, and Emergency Restart, which automatically resumes interrupted downloads without starting over.
