• Bad, worse, worst

  Pros

  The idea of the program is fine, the payout of the program is okay. In fact I want just a program as NewsReader, but then a program that I really can use.

  Cons

  Well, where do I have to start? - Problems if you try to load the subject-lines of a large newsgroup: after hours and hours it looks like it is still busy. - Messages sometimes disappear when you try to download them. After going to another newgroup and go back, the message is back. That has to say: it's only unreadable bullshit. - If you try to delete a list of subject-lines, sometimes only the even (or odd?) lines are deleted. If you delete line-by-line, sometimes suddenly the cursor goes UP instead of down. So if you are a bit too fast, you delete the one you don't want to delete at all. - If you want to check a list of messages you want to download, sometimes it just stops checking half-way or so. You only can check the rest if you go to another newsgroup and go back. - If you press on the checkbox when not all parts of a picture are read, it stops receiving the rest of the parts So the conclusion of this newest version (18.1 rev.6): way to many problems, so unworkable!

  Summary

  I use NewsReader already for a very long time, just because I couldn't find a newsreader with better possibilities. Okay, there were some problems some years ago already. And with every new version you hope that the problems are solved. Bad luck. Most errors are NOT solved and the only thing is: you get new problems. Like now: trying to read the new subject-lines for one newsgroup: .... after 6 hours I really had to go to bed :( Some years ago I tried to tell them already what problems I found. Reply on all my problems: sorry, we can't reproduce your problem. Today new problems again. I get the idea that they can't solve the problems at all. I will install my old version again and start to search for another newsreader-program. There are many, but as far as I saw them now, I didn't like them. One star. Maybe even too much.

• Going down hill latest version...

  Pros

  I have used this program for years and loved it. Simple, fast, nice features, easy to use, sharp looking GUI and more.

  Cons

  Since the company decided to build a 64-bit version of the software the darn thing crashes every few minutes. Click on a message to download it-- crash. Highlight several messages to be downloaded at once-- crash. 18.1 Build 6, the most recent, is almost impossible to use. Unless some fixes become available -- and soon-- I am going to have to start snooping around for a replacement. I paid for my versions and the yearly subscription to use their search servers and it seems I'm throwing my money away.

  Summary

  Latest version not ready for prime time and should still be in beta (the 64-bit version anyway). Otherwise (and that's a big otherwise) News Rover has been rock solid for years and I have been very happy with it up until now.

• Lots of bugs and No email support

  -Easy to configure and use -Built in image viewer -Built in search feature

  Cons

  -Terrible support - email support requests are returned with mail system delivery errors -Awkward menu and interface -Constantly crashes

  Summary

  Crash prone software with poor support. Much better options available...

  Pros

  Can be highly efficient.

  Cons

  Unfortunately without safeguards you can be loading thousands of files at the expense of gigabytes of data which you pay for thru your news supplier.

  Get it for free thru your reader.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Dec 20, 2011<p/>At one time using N/R was a simple method of reading usenet. Alas those days are over. And every upgrade seems to make it worse. I've given up! I'll try another socalled service.

• Resource sucking, slow program.

  Pros

  Has a built-in photo viewer, and a gallery to view downloaded photos.

  Cons

  A real memory hog. Never-ending background processes cause program to bog down and even crash. It's constantly recompiling records, and who knows what else in the background so the program becomes unresponsive.

  Summary

  There has to be better news readers out there. I'm on the hunt. I've had it with this one after using it for a long time. I think it's just too clunky.

  its hopeless at getting a lot of headers. it will fetch 20,000 header and then not display them, very badly programed.

  don't bother, its had the same problem since 2005 and still not fixed.

  ,If you try and get a lot of header it loses them. the server search dose not find a lot of stuff that other readers will.

  Summary

• Very buggy product, uses lots of cpu for doing nothing

  Pros

  It has some nice feathures such as the viewer and I am use to it.

  Cons

  It has lots of bugs such as deletes don't delete all of the selected items, it seems to take alott of CPU for not doing very much, iIt is much slower than another newsreader I tried.

  Summary

  I have been using the product for a number of years and will stop using it and move to another product, say no more.

• Causes memory leak in large news groups

  Pros

  I have emailed support and they deny this issue exists. Yet version improvements admit the issues were fixed. I have not seen any improvement at all. Once loading several newsgroups. Memory usage soars to 80-90% and drags your pc to a crawl.

  Cons

  Memory Leak.

  Summary

  this is a good program, if not for the memory leak, the memory leak makes it terrible to use.
