• Works when nothing else does

  Worked on an older computer when all the major browsers overstrained it.

  Summary

  One of our home office desktop computers is a Lenovo that I think is 7-8 years old. It was upgradeable to Windows 10, but it is having what appears to be a common problem with Windows 8.1 and 10, namely running disk I/O usage at 100% frequently. The computer does this in spite of my having disabled everything that is recommended or advised to disable. 100% disk I/O is particularly true of browsers, most notoriously Chrome. I finally decided to see whether a "lightweight" alternative browser would work better. I passed up many of the alternative browsers including Slimjet and the Comodo products and decided to give Midori a try. When it opens or is doing heavy work, Midori does cause 100% disk usage, but then the system settles down again while I am still using the browser. It is the only browser that causes LESS than 100% disk usage AT ALL. I may consider adding more memory to the machine to ameliorate this problem, but in the meantime the computer needs to work.

  Took too long to even open, no password saves, gave me problems at a flash game at F.B. which is why I downloaded this piece of doo doo in the first place.

  Summary

  I've tried many browsers lately. This was recommended by some guy who did a test on lesser known browsers. This one was second in fastest according to him with FireFox being the fastest. It didn't work for me. I have XP sp2 to give you my computer background. It took at least 30 seconds before it would even open. Doesn't save passwords which is a HUGE no no for me. Also as I said I tried to get the Flash settings up over a game I was going to play. It came up but wouldn't display local settings, plus I couldn't even close the flash settings panel. This tells me that this browser is NOT fast and has issues. I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a faster less complicated browser.

  Lightweight and fast. DuckDuckGo as a default search engine.

  Lags sometimes. Needs extensions.

  Summary

  I like the Linux version more, but this one gets better with each release. It's really great for PCs with low RAM. Actually, reminds me of Opera. However, it still needs some improvements. Future versions are sure to be better.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Jul 6, 2015<p/>Almost a year has passed since I last tried out Midori, and it's no good - no improvements. I wish they work harder on the browser stability and compatibility with add-ons. A promising project now dead.

• More trouble than it is worth

  Pros

  User scripts and styles. Supports HTML5 video and audio. Built in spell checker. PDFs can be viewed in browser window by copying Sumatra netscape plugin npPdfViewer.dll to plugins folder.

  Cons

  Cannot restore last session. Does not remember passwords. Flash block is only available with a third party script. I cannot log into Google accounts because I get a message saying cookies are disabled. Flash video only works if you install Adobe plugin and copy flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32_11_9_900_117.dll to plugins folder. No in private browsing.

  Summary

  It is not particularly light on system resources which might make it's limitations justified on old hardware. For instance with the Youtube homepage open it uses 160 MB of memory. Why bother with Midori?<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Nov 16, 2013<p/>I forgot to mention that Midori cannot import Internet Explorer favourites. It can only import from xbe and html files which rules out importing from the IE bookmarks.htm. The only way to do this is to use the Transmute bookmarks manager to convert bookmarks.htm to bookmarks.html. Transmute also requires .NET Framework 3.5 or higher to be installed. A lot of trouble for a mediocre browser.

• The Little Browser that Could, now available 4 Windows.

  Pros

  Extremely Fast Lightweight Updated Monthly WebKit-based, WebKit2 coming soon... HTML5 supported Acid3 test PASSED High level of importance placed on browsing privacy. DuckDuckGo.com default search engine, many others supported. Very customizable Adblock!! Numerous other extensions available Works great on Linux, Ubuntu, Elementary OS, Windows 7/Vista, etc.

  Cons

  Still a bit rough around the edges... Flash supported, but only via roundabout "Enable Netscape/Firefox Plugins" method. Will crash every now and then (at least on Windows 7), but much less often than any version of Internet Explorer. No support for Android yet :( Windows 64-bit version still in experimental stage (32-bit version is stable) A small number of websites heavily discriminate against any non-major browser (ie Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc), and will only load mobile version when using Midori.

  Summary

  Midori is my favorite browser on Ubuntu and other similar Linux systems. On Windows 7/Vista, it among my top 5 favorites, and my WebKit-based browser of choice. It receives regular updates, is developed by individual human beings instead of a faceless corporation, and is on the cutting edge of browsing technology. Unlike other browsers that claim to place an emphasis on privacy, but in reality do little or nothing to prevent your browsing habits from being tracked, Midori actually follows up on this promise from the get-go. Unfortunately, Midori doesn't have the polished, highly-sophisticated GUI design that other larger browsers have, and its cutting-edge nature can cause it to crash every now and then (though it still puts every version of Internet Explorer to shame regarding stability). The lack of an Android version also kind of sucks, but for anyone who regularly switches back and forth between Linux OS's and Windows, the familiarity that comes with using the same browser really comes in handy. Among all the smaller, non-major browsers, Midori is probably my favorite. Simply put, it's the "little browser that could".

  Flash refuses to work on my machine, and i have not tried Java or Google Voice plugins, but have not heard good reports.

  Pros

  Lightweight. Compare it with Chrome!!! Some nice features. Comes with Duck Duck Go, a neat Search Engine. Seems stable.

  Cons

  Took some time to work out Flash, until presto, I found a simple remedy.

  Summary

  The reason for writing this review is that I could not get Flash player to work on certain sites (example Liverpool FC) which bugged the heck out of me. Neither could I find a solution on any forums. Although I had it installed and it worked well with Firefox, Flash would not work in Midori......... until I found the simple remedy. In Midori, go to Edit/Preferences/Behavior, and check Enable Netscape plugins. Simple. I gather that the reviewer who previously advised to "Forget this browser it's useless-" was faced with the issue I was faced with, but did not find the solution. So to anyone out there about to give up and uninstall Midori: give it a chance, it appears to be a decent browser.

  A new browser that was brought out this year-2010,that tries to be like Firefox and Lunascape in that it claims to have a web kit and Gecko engine. Lunascape browser it a triple engine browser. But this browser is NOTHING like Lunascape or Firefox.

  Summary

  Midori claims to have a Gecko and web kit double engine,the same as Lunascape has.Except Lunascape has 3 engines in it's browser,Trident Internet explorer based, Gecko,same as Firefox has and web kit,chrome based. But if that's the case, I saw no likeness to the wonderful Firefox or Lunascape browsers. For a start, the index bar where you type the web address did not work and the browser was slow and once I got to the web page I could not even scroll down it! And I could not play any videos on any video site not even on You Tube. I got a message saying download flash player,despite the fact that I already have flash players installed on my PC. And these all work on my other browsers,but when I downloaded the flash player and I still could not play any videos and I got the same message.Download flash player and even downloading was difficult as the downloads opened into a zip file which I opened and still the videos never played. But all my other browsers play the videos and upgrade my flash player and add ons without any problems. Apart from this the browser was very slow and did not work good and I found it's appearance quite ugly.With that and also I could not play videos with this browsers and that reason alone made me uninstall it. The verdict on Midori browser is- forget it and stick to Firefox,Lunascape or Mozillas other excellent browsers,such as Flock,Wyzo or Seamonkey. But don't bother getting Midori. Andrea Borman.
