Though it never achieved Contra-like success, this game series ran for more than a decade and had a dozen titles. Now, you can have all the side-scrolling fun of Metal Slug on your Android gadget. It might not run smoothly on every gadget, but newer tablet and smartphone owners should have plenty of fun.

If you've ever played any of the arcade versions of the game, you'll feel right at home. If not, Metal Slug is a fairly typical scrolling shooter. You run through screen after screen, blasting away at aliens and tanks that threaten to take over the world. Thanks to only a few buttons, the game's controls won't feel bizarre on your smartphone. They will take up a good deal of room if you have a smaller screen, though. If your processor isn't up to snuff, the game might seize or run slowly. However, if you've got the specs to run it, the game plays wonderfully. Movement from screen to screen is fast and the levels and difficulty behave just like the console version.

If your smartphone or tablet has replaced your DS, this game can be an awesome addition to your library. It's hard to argue with hours of side-scrolling and tank-shooting fun. Metal Slug will be a fun blast from the past for older gamers but will still feel fresh to people who didn't grow up with it. The game is a little graphic intense, so be careful if you're using an older smartphone or tablet to run it.

Fight through a hale of bullets and explosions in this classic 2D arcade platformer.
The player (1 is Marco and 2 is Tarma) has to constantly shoot at a continual stream of enemies in order to reach the end of a level. At the end of each level, the player confronts a boss who is often considerably larger than regular enemies and takes many shots to defeat. On the way through the level, the player finds weapons upgrades and "Metal Slug" tanks, known as the SV-001 (Super Vehicle), that can be used not only as weapons but also as added defense. The protagonists can perform melee attacks by using a knife and/or kicking. The player does not die for simply coming into contact with most enemies. Correspondingly, many of the enemy troops have melee attacks. Much of the game's scenery is destructible. Sometimes this reveals extra items or powerups, most of the time it simply results in collateral damage. During the course of a level, the player encounters prisoners of war. If they are freed, the player can receive bonuses in the form of random items or weapons. The player receives a score bonus for freeing POWs at the end of the level; at this point the game shows the name and rank for each of the prisoners freed. If the player dies before the end of the level, the tally of freed POWs is restarted. There are a total of six levels, with themes ranging from forests, garrisoned cities, snowy mountain valleys, canyons, and military bases.
