MathType for Macintosh is a powerful interactive equation editor that lets you create mathematical notation for word processing, web pages, desktop publishing, presentations, and for TeX, LaTeX, and MathML documents.
alignment, flexibility (e.g., large subscripts), custom toolbars, integration with Mathematica, and with MS Word, easy export in variety of formats
Cons
Extras (auto eqn numbering) only with Word 2004. Hope Word 2011 will restore Visual Basic and fix this.
Summary
Superb equation editor, even the MathType Lite version is great. Would be nice to have an equation database, to store equations by topic area; for now I just store equations in topic-based Word files. I had no trouble installing but I was upgrading from older versions.
Installer is faulted

Pros
Previous versions worked great
Cons
Installer did not work as promised
Summary
Altough installer said MathType 6.0b was correctly installed it did not work.
MathType support said it was an OLE problem and took me through steps to correct it but these didn't work either. I was than told of two choices. 1) I needed to remove MathType, reinstall MSWord and repeat. I asked what I could do to restore my computer to the previous verions (Time maciine and/or disk image). I was told that this was not possible. They couldn't telll me which files needed to be restored.
In fact it took me about 5minutes to do a global search for MathType on the main disk and the mirror. Compared the two, replaced the new ones from the files on the mirror and this solved the problem.
MathType support told me other users had the same problem that they had no idea what caused it.

Updated on Feb 2, 2010
Sorry; 2nd choice was to use Time Machine to restore the entire disk.
could not see any improvement over v5.1

Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
except being UB now, could not find any improvements on UI or feature set since v5.1.
Copying as TeX causes error very often and unstable, especially when there are some accute or accents applied. Sometimes crashes when pasting or typing TeX expressions.
You may just call it v5.x but defintely not v6.0 with this much changes.
Please watch out your competitors, MathMagic and MathEq.

Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
After a long wait, version 5 is available for the Mac. I am runnng Panther 10.3.3 and everything has gone exceedingly well. First, I deleted all MathType v3.7 files, yes, all of them. The "uninstaller" missed some but OS X found the rest. Then I installed v5.0 and it is working perfectly. The connections to Microsoft Word v10.1.4 were made correctly and are also working perfectly. After installing OS X some 15 months ago, I am now back in business with MathType. I did not wait for the 30-day, full, free trial to expire. I paid immediately and it is worth every (Euro)cent.
