With Mail Act-On for Mac you can map customized email rules more easily, creating sophisticated email workflows that ditch the repetitive and tedious process of manual email organization. This app enhances Apple's Mail app.

Pros

Easy rule creation: What makes Mail Act-On really great is the way it shortens the process of using rules in Mail. Through a pop-up menu or by pressing a key or combination of keys, you can put rules to work and, since the pop-up menu has a search field that performs the search as you type, finding lengthy rules and using them turns out to be fairly easy.

Templates for quick replies: The Edit Mail Act-On Template window presents fields through which you can set the description, the applicable Act-On key, and tokens. What's more, through the Composer options box you can set how messages will be delivered, as well as configure the archiving of sent messages.

Easy-to-understand main panel for preferences: There are three rules tabs: Inbox Rules, Outbox Rules, and Act-On Rules. The Act-On Rules tab is where you will be setting up your custom keystrokes.

Cons

Only works with Mac OS X 10.8 and 10.9: With more than a third of Mac computers at present still using versions of the Mac OS older than 10.8, it would have been great if this update of Mail Act-On (version 3.0.2) were compatible with older Macs.

Feels like renting: The price of Mail-Act On is off-putting as upgrading to the typical annual updated version costs $14.95, which is not that discounted compared to the regular $24.95 price.

Bottom Line

Mail Act-On does a great job complementing the functions of Mail. It's a handy add-on to have if you frequently need to send and receive emails, serving as a keyboard-based interface for setting and triggering Mail rules that can boost your email handling efficiency.

I love setting keyboard shortcuts to move selected mail to certain folders, I love to be able to make a rule so every time I send an email it goes to a certain sent folder. Many other great things to keep inbox down and keep your organized.

Very helpful in getting my Inbox to Empty. Unlike a previous reviewer, I do not find Mail Act-On complex, neither to set up, nor especially to use. It is a delight. In fact, I just experienced a glitch Ã¢?? whether due to 2.1.1 or an Apple update Ã¢?? which rendered MAO unresponsive. This issue has served to highlight how much I love this simple utility. The issue is reported on Indev's website, and I am confident that a fix will be forthcoming soon.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Originally a nice simple add-on for email. It did its job well. It was simple to set up. It was free. Five stars in every category. The developer revamps MAO for Leopard and forgets what made MAO great. Simple, reliable and free becomes complicated, problematic and overpriced. A better strategy would have been to offer two versions: a simple 10 version (nobody begrudges the developer a reasonable return on his efforts) comparable (in ease of use and options) to the original MAO and this much more complicated, overdeveloped for the masses, version. Until then, RIP MAO.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Looks the author wanted to start from scratch rather than improving a small but very effective helper app. Now its three trigger keys instead of one (F1-F3) you cannot modify them and there are secondary keys with and without CTRL key pressed and.... . This is simply too much and too much different from V1. Although I like the new Outbox Rules I will stick with the more simple and elegant V1. And yes, 25$ is far to much for a program add-on!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />This was a nice clean cheap SIMPLE app that provided me useful keystroke shortcuts for more than a year; now I'm afraid the author got greedy and killed it. $25 is WAY too expensive, the interface is now complicated and non-Mac (you have to use function keys?!?), and, well, I don't like it. As a shareware donator on the old version, I also bristle at having another $25 demanded -- it is commercial and not shareware when there is a 21-day time limit to fork over the dough. A shame. Uninstalling after ten minutes. Alternatives anyone?

Significant new features, including the AMAZING addition of Outgoing mail rules. I would have paid $20 for any utility that gave me this single feature. Great work, easily worth the price.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Have been using and benefitting from this app for a while, especially in dealing with junk mail (I like to DELETE it rather than trashing it, as I keep all my trash). Leopard Mail disables it on launch and advises the used to contact the developer, so perhaps the current version does work and Apple is concerned third-party plug-ins will make it look bad. Along with the death of Classic, another unwelcome loss of backward compatibility that makes me wonder whether I should have waited for 15.1, or not upgraded at all.

Could be because I am using an IMAP server; may work just fine for the majority using POP servers. I've tried to narrow it down, and it seems that there's a problem in handling network operations (ops that change folders on IMAP server). May be it tries to show an updated window after a fixed amount of time, and if the operation takes longer, something bad happens. Would it be possible to make it single key (instead of entering the quote first)?

Mail Act-On is a plugin Apple's Mail (Panther & Tiger) in that allows you to map specific mail rules or actions to "Act-On" keys. When viewing mail you can apply an "Act-On" action for a message by making simple keystrokes. Mail Act-On makes use of Mail's existing rule engine, so if you have ever created a rules, you already know 99% of what you need to know to build an Act-On action. Imagine, no AppleScripts or other macros. (Even if you haven't ever created a mail rule, there is very little to learn!)
