Lyft is a ridesharing app that enables you to book a ride from Lyft's community of drivers at an affordable rate.

Pros

Easy booking: Launch the app, enter your destination address (Lyft tracks your pickup location automatically!), your vehicle option, and then tap Set Pickup. Within minutes, you'll be on your way.

Various vehicle options: You can book a shared Line, a regular Lyft, a roomy Plus, a high-end Premier or Lux, or a roomy and high-end Lux SUV, depending on your needs.

Affordable shares: Lyft's cost-cutting Line option helps you save money -- 30 to 60 percent -- by pairing you with other passengers heading in your direction.

Plenty of safeguards: Lyft claims that all of its drivers must pass rigorous background and DMV checks. Drivers that get consistently poor ratings are barred from driving. Lyft also provides its own liability insurance (up to one million dollars) to protect passengers.

Cons

Prices can surge during high-demand periods: If a lot of riders are booking Lyfts at the same time, then the company raises rates to encourage more drivers to get on the clock by enabling them to charge more per ride.
