Editors’ Review
If you frequently access Web content in a language other than your mother tongue, you know how important it is to have a good translator handy. Firefox users should try ImTranslator for Firefox, a browser extension that makes it easy to access translations between numerous different languages. With a comprehensive set of translation tools, ImTranslator for Firefox is a great choice for both new-language learns and experienced polyglots who need a hand now and then.
Like most Firefox extensions, ImTranslator required a browser restart to complete installation. Once the extension was installed, we were able to access it both from Firefox's Tools menu and the context menu. The easiest way to use ImTranslator is simply to highlight the text you want to translate, right-click, and select ImTranslator from the menu. This opens a window showing both the original text and the translation in the language of your choice. Users can use the translation service they prefer; options include PROMT, Babylon, Google Translate, and Microsoft Translator. In addition to the translation tool, ImTranslator also comes with a multilanguage virtual keyboard, a text-to-speech tool, and a dictionary. We were impressed with the wide variety of languages that ImTranslator supports -- 41 in all. The program comes with a detailed online Help file, but we didn't need to consult it; we found the extension to be quite intuitive after just a few minutes of experimentation. Overall, we were impressed with ImTranslator's capabilities, and we recommend it to any Firefox user who's multilingual, or striving to be.
ImTranslator installs and uninstalls without issues.
