Supported file types are: BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG, JNG, MNG, JPEG, PSD, PBM, PGM, PPM, and TGA, MRW, CRW, CR2, THM, NEF, DCR, and DNG, read embedded images from EPS, EPSI, EPSF, AI and PDF. High performance TIFF access or manipulation getIFDCount, getIFD, saveIFD, insertIFD, appendIFD, removeIFD, split, merge, and vertical Merge. The supported metadata: IPTC, EXIF, XMP, Wang Annotations, ImageResourceBlock, ImageFileDirectrory, and JPEG Markers.

Rich in file types, robust and resource friendly

Pros
My experience so far with Imagero Reader is limited to dealing with problematic images. That is, image data that either doesn't quite adhere to strict format specification(s), or causes fatal problems for JREs' built-in decoders which aren't robust enough to "survive" those discrepancies. <p> <p> <p>Handling images coming from more or less unreliable sources (e.g. the WWW), I regularly have to solve "mystery cases": images that cause problems to my processing software, designed to download, scale down, re-encode, display re-encoded scaled-down versions, and simultaneously store them into a database. <p> <p> <p>I even came upon an image which, not long ago (Sun's j2se prior or equal to 1.4.2_04 and j2se prior or equal to 1.5.0-b64), caused JVMs to crash (and I mean crash, not throw an exception) in a native decoder method. Needless to say, this was quite a shock. It had me started looking around for alternatives pretty quick. A couple of queries later, I downloaded Imagero Reader. <p> <p> <p>After disposing of some initial misconceptions, clarified by the author - Andrey Kuznetsov - (thanks again, Andrey), and finally going through an excellent Imagero Reader tutorial [blush/], I found out that that was exactly what I needed. And more! Compared to the Sun's JVM's (as of build 1.5.0_06-b05) built-in readers/decoders, Imagero Reader is quite a bargain: it supports (a lot) more file types, it's more robust and even resource-friendlier. And I merely scratched the surface!
