Used Hauste for Android?
Editors’ Review
Hauste, from Hauste Natur, is a digital field guide for foraging in Norway, made for beginners and experienced foragers. The app supplies expert-vetted species profiles, a seasonal harvesting calendar, private map logging, community identification, recipe ideas, and trail discovery to support safe, sustainable outdoor learning. Outdoor enthusiasts, amateur mycologists, and educators focused on place-based food education can use it to learn identification, document finds, and reflect on seasonal patterns.
Functions as a field reference that supports safe identification
The app centers on in-field recognition of mushrooms, berries, and edible plants by providing specialist-reviewed species profiles and safety guidance. It explicitly addresses poisonous look-alikes and seasonal availability, which helps learners reduce risk during hands-on outings. For a learner, that means factual descriptions and seasonal timing are presented together so identification practice ties directly to when and where species appear.
Supports experiential learning with peer input and personal records
The app encourages iterative observation through a built-in herbarium for users to store photos and notes, and a community feature for shared identifications. Those elements create cycles of practice, feedback, and refinement: learners document finds, compare images across trips, and receive peer or expert help to correct misidentifications. Recipe entries link harvested items to practical use, reinforcing applied learning beyond recognition alone.
Best for self-directed outdoor learners in Norway, with device and access limits
The app targets outdoor enthusiasts and both novice and seasoned foragers in Norway, and the developer works with certified mushroom and plant experts to ensure content quality. Progress tracking relies on repeated field visits and private map entries to build a personal log; Android 5.0 or later is required, so classroom deployments need compatible devices and opportunities for regular outdoor practice.
Pros
- Expert-verified species profiles increase identification reliability
- Private map logging preserves precise locations from public view
- Digital herbarium enables iterative observation and reflection
Cons
- Focused on Norwegian flora, limiting applicability elsewhere
- Requires Android 5.0 or later, excluding older devices
- Learning depends on repeated outdoor access for effective practice
Bottom Line
Practical choice for place-based learners who commit to repeated field practice
Hauste is a practical option for learners in Norway who want hands-on, safety-focused foraging education and long-term observational records. Its emphasis on outdoor practice means classroom-only programs should supplement with field trips. Practical tip: schedule regular seasonal outings and keep consistent photo notes to build a comparative record that strengthens identification skills over time.
