The main focus of Google Search is the ability to look things up on the Web. In addition to text search, which is available in all browsers, the app lets you perform voice searches. However, the best and most distinguishing feature in the app is without a question Google Now -- an intelligent cards-based system for giving you relevant information before you ask for it.
Google Now integration: When you enable Google Now, you'll notice that occasionally different cards appear on the bottom half of the app. This is Google Now -- a service that monitors your location, appointments, emails, reminders, Web searches, and more in order to provide predictive assistance with the task you're about to perform.
Voice search: By pressing the microphone icon to the right of the main search field, you'll be able to dictate the things you're looking for instead of typing.
Reminder support: Google Search also has a Reminders feature, which adds custom reminder cards to Google Now and notifies you at the specified time.
Zero privacy: By using Google services in general and Google Now in particular, you agree to let Google scan all your communications and even your Web searches, which is basically trading your privacy for the convenience that Google Now provides.
Google account required: You cannot complete the setup process without signing into your Google account.
Contrary to what it says on the tin, Google's services like Search and Google Now do not come free of charge. While you're not paying monetarily, you're agreeing to have your information sold to interested third parties in exchange for the services that are provided to you. If you're comfortable with such an arrangement, you'll find the predictive notifications about appointments, travel times, and ticket information very handy and useful.
We've introduced a new feed experience on the homepage of the Google app to help you better keep up to date with the topics that matter to you. You'll see cards with things like sports highlights, top news, engaging videos, new music, stories to read and more. With the new feed, you can now:
¢?¢ Follow topics, directly from Search results, including movies, sports teams, your favorite bands or music artists, famous people, and more
¢?¢ Get stories with multiple viewpoints from a variety of sources, as well as other related information and articles
¢?¢ Easily search for the topics you see in your feed by tapping on the subject header at the top of each card
Note: the updated feed is currently available on iPhone only
