Golden Eagle Flight Prep provides all the tools pilots need to plan a flight route. Offering a surprising amount of useful and specialized features, this is a great addition to any general aviation pilot's software collection.

The program's interface might seem intimidating to nonpilots, since it's peppered with aviation jargon, FAA abbreviations, and other flight-related specifics. However, the manual in the program's Help file clarifies most questions and proves that Golden Eagle Flight Prep is, in fact, a very user-friendly design. The program's primary function is flight itinerary planning, which is made simple as pointing your cursor on the map and selecting the appropriate airports for your journey. Flight routes are laid out on a map. Elevation displays in a handy flow chart and is also easy to select and modify. Golden Eagle's Raster Charts offer a detailed look at air traffic control zones around the USA. These helped us plan a clear path to our destination. In addition, the DUATS chart, which illuminates weather concerns around the country, was clear and easy to read and worked in tandem with our travel route. Golden Eagle's best feature is a real time-saver: By clicking on a map, you can call up information such as longitude, latitude, longest runway, and elevation about any airport on your route. This program seemingly thought of everything you need to plan an air journey.

Golden Eagle Flight Prep is freeware. This is a great tool for pilots to plot their course by, and we recommend it.

Like most "free" software available on the market, this product is really a "teaser" for all of the other products Flight Prep sells. Expect to be "up sold" after you register.

Pros
With Eagle I can throw together an abundance of flight plans, compare the results, pick the best and run the final out in less time than one half-conceived plan on any of the dozen other planners I've tried. Accessing DUATS from inside is frosting.
Cons
I fly South, particularly Mexico. It would be advantageous for the user to be able to put airports directly into the database. I'm backwards: I like to see how far I've gone. Give me control of the output format and I'll buy the "Pro" version.
Summary
I've used this product for the last couple of years and I wonder why they hid it at the bottom of the DUATS screen amongst the disclaimers and the Lawyer's Chorus where it took me 2,000 hours to find it. It's fast. Intuitive. Responsive zoom control. Intelligent auto-routing. Independent legs and waypoints modifiable on-the-fly. Flexible, responsive rubber-banding. Winds, METARs, TAFs at your fingertips. DUATS faster than you can find the Bookmark. The first profile view I've seen and with MEAs, Class B airspace, winds aloft arrows, clouds and terrain all laid out in instant recognizability. But the best part, nothing handy is more than two-clicks deep. And it has all this portability, connectivity and interface that I haven't even begun to explore.

Sounds like a great piece of software

My firewall scanned it as containing malicious code, said it changes files. could just be recognizing that the program accesses other servers to obtain data for the planning software. My antivirus scan didn't find it dangerous
Summary
Anyone else have any problems or suspect it contains malware? I am afraid to open it.
