Editors’ Review
Inspired by OS X's Get Info option, FileXaminer for Mac comes with powerful features such as editing the permissions table, changing ownership, and converting images. It's a premium app that also offers batch operations like editing the attributes of several files at the same time. Another handy option is the ability to edit text documents as the root user, which is particularly useful for tweaking system files.
When launched, FileXaminer for Mac lets you enable keyboard shortcuts that trigger its functions. Unlike most apps, this product has no main window; file inspection is performed either through the app's Info menu or via the keyboard shortcuts. The information panel is broken down into several categories, the default of which can be chosen in the app's preferences. Some notable features include changing the name, tags, created and modified dates; adjusting file permissions, flagging a file as locked or invisible, and generating custom icons. Images can also be converted to other formats while text documents can be edited with root permissions.
Frustrated with the limited number of options available in OS X's Get Info panel? FileXaminer for Mac can offer you more. While still less capable than a command line, this premium product allows for deeper attribute customization, including some UNIX attributes. But if you've never opened a Get Info panel in your life, this app will be of little use to you.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of FileXaminer for Mac 2.8.1.
