2012, never checks in on iMac
markus_unread- Pros
- Can't tell. Doesn't work.
- Cons
- I have had it running on my iMac with Snow Leopard and it has yet to connect. I get no errors from it either. The website still sends emails saying that my account is going to expire and I renew it manually. It would be nice if there was a debug or verbose mode so I could see what it THINKS it is doing.
- Summary
- Doesn't error, doesn't work, can't figure out why!
Awesome Update!

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using the DynDNS service for years. At first I had to manually update my IP addy. Then DynDNS update for Apple came along- and what a relief that was! I didn't have to update my IP by surfing to the DynDNS site anymore- the app did it automatically. Today I updated with the latest version, 2.3, and WOW! I love it. The look is so smooth, the documentation is written for both advanced types (me) and neophytes- so if you are is setting up this (esoteric to most folks) service for the first time- they hold your hand and explain everything! The widget for DashBoard is most stylish. Very cool. I highly recommend this latest incarnation of DynDNS Update...

Universal binary would be useful

Highly Recommended!!!

- If you have a DNS account from DynDNS.org and are running OS X, then this is for you. It does what it's suppose to, plus, it's free. It's very easy to set up. What more could you ask for. I'm running it with OS X v.10.4.6, on a G4 w/1.25gb of ram. The vnc client is Redstone's OSXvnc. I use Chicken of the VNC for the vnc viewer software. I also have to use WinBlows. On those computers I use DirectUpdate. I feel it's as good as DirectUpdate, and that one you have to pay for it.

Still has bugs. It CAN 'get easier', hopefully.

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using DNSUpdate for a couple years now in conjunction with the great free DynDNS service for my FTP server, for which I have about 900 clients. Many of them cannot deal with raw IP addresses, so having a domain name makes them happy. I am glad that at last DynDNS now officially sanctions DNSUpdate via this new branch off the project. But sadly this new named version has the same old bug as the old one where you MUST reboot your computer to get the daemon to actually work properly. In my case today it outright told me that my domain name was NOT registered, when I knew damn well it was. I gave the system a reboot and the daemon woke up. Also annoying is the fact that despite this being almost exactly the same as the old application, it is too stupid to realize that you have the previous version's daemon still installed. As a result you end up with two daemons installed, both banging away, every minute, at the DynDNS server with your IP address. You have to either deinstall the old daemon using the old application or remove it by hand from your StartupItems. Grrrrr. I am looking forward to the next version which will supposedly let us lengthen the time between connects to DynDNS. About time. It CAN 'get easier', hopefully. In the meantime, I am grateful that despite the bugs this is still a free program.
Seems to work ok

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It didnt upgrade the data from DNSUpdate which it replaces but does offer a secure connection to dyndns and downloaded most of my config from there. I did have to tell each server record what interface to use before activating each in turn, but other than that it seems to work fine. If it is as reliable as DNSUpdate then great. It certainly looks very similar.
